Edumacate me with crossovers, somebody

What is anyone's experience of crossing over GAI cards to PSA? I am interested in an 8.5 currently. What is best procedure? Send it in GAI holder & ask for cross over grade or break it out & send it in raw? Or are GAI cards worth it? Am I on crack thinking PSA would grade it a 9 if I was to send it in the GAI folder? Do they have a history of trimming or re-coloring? Any help would be appreciated.

GAI is a reputable company so I wouldn't worry about the trimming or re-coloring. I would crack and submit for best results. I have an 8.5 that I am planning on sending in for this month's special. I am cracking it. My logic is that PSA isn't going to want to take a GAI 8.5 and bump it up to a 9 since they would basically be saying that GAI is tougher graders.

Crack it. You have a better chance of it getting the bump outside of a GAI holder.

I have had some success on GAI 8.5 and SGC 92's getting the bump. I also have had some GAI 9's and Sgc 96's come back as PSA 8's.

Crack and resubmit. I've had great success with cracking GAI 9.5's and getting PSA 10's. In fact, I've crossed every one of them. There are quite a few threads on this that you can search as well.

I have tried to cross 3 GAI 8 or 8.5's after cracking them out. Two crossed to PSA 8. The third came back trimmed twice and I agree with that assessment.

  • so...you now have a card w/ no grade, that started out in a gai holder? If it was a valuable card, you are kind of "screwed" now, right? I have personally only crossed over a few GAI cards to psa, but every time i send it in the GAI holder w/ a minimum crossover grade. Thus if there is any problem it will remain holdered.

I think bigger dollar items almost have to stay in the holder. I crossed a 48 Leaf Dimaggio from SGC to PSA. In the holder. No way would I want that thing floating around. And if I don't like one company's assessment, I can sell it, still holdered, from a reputable grader.

How successful have you been with this? Have you ever gotten a higher grade with PSA than what the GAI holder had?

I've had great luck crossing from 8.5 to 9. Currently, I'm 3/3 with 1 in right now. I know this is said probably too much, but buy the card not the holder. Much more likely to cross to a higher grade if you thought it was undergraded to begin with.

Oh, and definitely crack and resubmit.

  • i have never gotten a higher grade, always the same. I have had 2 8's cross as 8's and a seven cross as a seven. I crossed them for my aaron registry. as the registry gets harder to fill, i find myself buying other company graded cards...actually only GAI so far. My big issue is my GAI 8.5 aaron rookie. I may send it with crossover request of a "9". Worst that could happen is i get back the gai 8.5.

  • Well Zef, it is a high end item. And after all the good advice from everyone, I am still scared to jump in. I like the comment that if I buy it & send it in raw, it could come back lower or ungraded. Now I would be stuck with an ungradable card that currently was in a 8.5 holder!

So do I fell edumacated? I never do!

  • I just recently cracked out a GAI 8 card that I paid ~$3k for and sent it to PSA. The grade i got? ....<drumroll>.... PSA 8.
  • I cracked 3 GAI holders because they listed the version wrong (1989 Fleer Bill Ripken) and would not correct it,or even answer my emails. I cracked/sent one GAI 5 to Beckett received a BGS 4. I have another GAI 9.5 that would MAYBE get a 9 in a PSA or BGS.
