anybody else getting the feeling is trying to play a different role all of a sudden? he seems to be trying to, for lack of a better term, show a softer a side of himself.

He's still a putz...what's kinda funny is watching him swing lately...he's been spinning out of his shorts. That strikeout the other night and the bomb he hit last night. He's swinging for the fences and it looks like he's really trying hard to do it. It used to look effortless...wonder why that is? </end sarcasm>
  • Now that is one of those timeless sports photos. Up there with Orr's goal, Ali standing over a beaten Liston and Mays Greatest Catch.
  • "still cant hit the ball like Mantle 565ft no juice! " - That one he hit last night might have never come down if the upper deck didn't get in the way.

Bonds is a jerk, but I don't want to date him. I just want to see him hit the baseball. So, I don't care if he's a jerk. He took steroids. He played in the steroid era. Lots of guys took steroids. He was just the best player taking steroids. Lots of players in the 70s and 80s took speed. That is illegal. It was probably even against the rules. Twenty years from now, if Bonds is still alive, he might show up at your local park. Most people will stand up and cheer, because they got to see the homerun king.

Major league baseball has always know that guys were taking steroids. The players' union has known that guys were taking steroids. No one cared. We payed to see the big guys hit the long shots. MLB and the players union got to make lots of money. They didn't care until everyone outside of baseball pretended to care.

If you don't like Bonds, too bad. He probably wouldn't like you or me, even if he knew who we are.

    << <i>Bonds is a clown! how many rings? >>

Yes because Bonds' lack of rings is his fault, right?

<< <i>Still cant hit the ball like Mantle 565ft no juice! also mantle hit 18 hrs in world series how many has bonds have? Mantle will always be king!!!!!!!! >>

Mantle will be the king of what? Alcoholism?

By no means a Bonds apologist, but to say Mantle is the king is just absurd.

There was another version of that sign that said:

"Ruth did it on hot dogs & Beer, Aaron did it with class, How did YOU do it?''

also some fans in the upper deck covered the GEI on the GEICO sign with a sheet that said BAL

I love these threads where those who couldn't hit a softball 135 feet or throw a baseball over 48 mph pile on the Bond's Bashwagon. The 'news' and story are sooooooo old. In the end, Bonds will get what he deserves regardless of how many beer-bellied couch potatoes catcall here on the CU boards. Yeah the banner is big and bold and just a waist of paper, time, and effort. Think of the kids who could have benefitted by all the paper airplanes that banner could have made!

You reap what you sow and Bonds will live the rest of is life with his decisions - that's good enough for me.

If you really want to talk about something current and/or mainstream, how about a thread on Paris Hilton or glacier-melting in Greenland?

    Again.............same old story
  • Fair enough Bill, I can see it from your perspective. Curious, would it be best if news on Bonds be only related to his on field activities, more specifically, performance and not personality related? Suppose he calls it quits at 754 HRs, certainly a news worthy event. How could this be covered without seeming like "old news?"

    Bill,

I played some ball and am fairly certain I could still hit a ball in BP out of Wrigley. If not for that damn curveball I coulda been somebodyimage

I am angry and disappointed with Bonds because he would have gone done as one of the best without any of this garbage. The guy was a stud before steroids and while it may have prolonged his career, it killed his reputation and credibilty. People can look past an a-hole, like Ty Cobb, but they cant look past a liar and a cheat when combined with being an a-hole. Giambi was a cheat but he ended up telling the truth and was a nice guy and won comeback player of the year(which is a joke in my mind but it follows my point here).

I am in awe at the things Bonds has done. I think in todays age it was a level playing field, if you catch my drift. So with more than is known that did the juice he still shined like a star. He has some of the best skills ever but he killed himself with all the other hoopla combined with his attitude and interactions with the media and fans.

Andrew and zef...........my post was part tongue-in-cheek and part truth. To answer your question, I really am more interested in his on-field playing, which at this point in time is in the batter's box - his fielding and running are now, and have been for some time, sub-par with regard to the average player. His personality, demeanor, etc. are typical Bonds from so, so long ago. Nothing he says or does away from the field surprises me, so that's why all the bandwagonning is out of date. Seven years from now he'll do or say something totally stupid, so it really doesn't matter in the big scheme of things what happens today, tomorrow, next week, or next year.

I've never been one to pile on someone who gets a constant dose of criticism whether they deserve it or not (except maybe for one CU member image ), so my feelings toward Bonds are no different from many other 'unfavorable' people. That doesn't mean I agree with or like them. Take Ty Cobb for instance. Extremely dirty player, etc. We all love him now but if he played in today's game as he did then, he'd arguably get the same treatment Bonds gets now. If that was the case, I'd be replacing the name 'Bonds' with 'Cobb' in the above post.

So what does this all mean? Well, I'll hear some criticism of this post, maybe a few Bonds fans will post, more anti-Bonds will comment, and the general degrading of the thread may occur. As I've said before...............same old story.

Overrated - you eerily remind me of our own JoeStalin.............is it true? A brother or cousin maybe. Just curious!!!!

Maybe I am in the dark and haven't read the stories close enough. What rules of baseball did Bonds break?

Maybe I am naive or whatever, but what rules did baseball have against what he was doing? What tests was baseball conducting? How many drug tests has Bonds failed?

If someone can give me baseball's 'steriod policy' from 99-02 I would like to know what it was. Hundreds upon thousands of athletes have broken laws. Can somebody tell me what rules of baseball he broke?

He did nothing wrong in the baseball rules. I think he is being ostrcized because he has been such a jerk.

Let me state my position a little more clearly. I am in awe of what Bonds has done on the field. I don't think he broke any baseball rules and he should not be more scrutinized than any of the other guys of his era. As I said, it was mostly a level playing field for this age of players. However, I can see where people are coming from when being upset with Bonds in his pursuit of history. Granted, steroids weren't against baseballs laws, but they may have gave him an advantage over everyone in history prior to this era. If you can't understand that because they weren't against "baseball laws" then you are very near sighted.

It makes me laugh when people try to say 'MLB didn't have a steroid policy before '03! Bonds didn't do anything wrong!!'

Steroids have long been a felony to possess or use without a doctor's prescription. While baseball did not have a specific 'steroid' policy, it has, in place, a policy prohibiting the use of any substance the US government deems to be illegal. Bonds could no more use steroids without getting in trouble with baseball than he could using cocaine or smoking weed.

Just because MLB didn't have a specific policy relating to steroids, they were in fact, illegal to use or own, and therefore, Bonds broke those rules by using and owning steroids. By his own (weak) admission, Bonds has admitted to using steroids (under grand jury testimony). Ergo, he broke the rules. He didn't need to fail a drug test to be guilty of steroid use under baseball rules.

Bonds is guilty, should be tossed out on his rear, and have his mark stay permanently at 713*.

While you have already said that your posts were partly in jest, some observations:
$$$ tickets=money for front office=money for players (and watching TV=occasionally responding to ads=ad $$ to station=money to front office for rights to broadcast-money for players). So, just because one may be a couch potato, does not mean they have to right to blast a player.

Also, do you realise how the paper of your 84 Donruss' is being wasted, as with the plastic of the slabs? Crack the slabs, recycle the cards and plastic, so that the resources can be put to good use. Yeah those cards are colourful and bold and just a waist (sic) of paper, time, and effort. Think of the kids who could have benefitted (sic) by all the paper airplanes those cards could have made!

  • As anyone can tell, Bonds does NOT have legs, but he still blasted that HR 450 feet, the more you bash him, the more he feeds off it, and I sure hope he whallops 50 or so more in the near future, BTW, I am sure that they can estimate that steroids caused that ball to fly 100 more feet, correct? I still want positive proof, the way I see it, if you are going to say Bonds did this, do not make your sources unidentified, these are serious allegations, and if they are true, why are you hiding!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The only phrase I can say to this, "it ain't a crime if you don't get caught!" Last I saw, statutory rape is also a crime, but if you are a good looking female teacher, you get away with it. There are more important crimes in society that go unpunished, than whether Bonds did roids or not, and I still have seen NO proof!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It never ceases to amaze me how much animosity people can muster up towards a baseball player. It's too bad we couldn't corral all this passion and use it towards raising money for a good charity.

How can you say baseball cared about steriod abuse? They were testing for illegal drugs in the late 80's (cocaine)!!! They were not testing for steriods. Major league baseball has themselves to blame. Did Bonds cheat and break rules? Not really. He followed the rules of baseball. Are his numbers 'tainted'. I would say so, but to crucify this man for trying to make himself better or healthier or whatever while baseball turned their head to him and hundreds? of other players is ridiculous IMO. McGwire was on what is now a banned substance, so were many others. Baseball wanted their power numbers up and were willing to ignore steriods until the public started griping aboout it.
