Hello Hello Zars....Part Deux ( welcome Back )

Just like last time I'm sending 7 ZAR coins to PCGS.

These coins are absolutely beautiful imo and some are the best ZAR coins that I have ever seen.

The 1897 Shilling is covered with the most beautiful toning ever !!!

Anyhow eventhough I haven't received grades for the first batch I've attempted to grade this bunch to the best of my abilities.

So in order to humilify myself I'll list them here:

1897 3d = MS63 Cleaned
1896 6d = MS60 AU50 - oops
1896 1S = MS60 Cleaned
1897 1S = MS62 Cleaned
1897 2S = AU55 MS61 - yippee
1896 2 1/2S = MS60 XF45 - doh
1897 2 1/2 S = MS61 MS63 - yippee

Here's to keeping the fingers crossed...........image

2 Yippees
2 Doh's
3 FFS !!

humilify I love it!!! Best new word I've seen in awhile... To act humble, to exhibit humility ahead of a test or given opinion that might embarrass us later.

    Really, I'm not mocking-I love the word.image

    and that each was undergraded.

  • OK coins are being send today.

Also having the $5 photo taken and keeping the fingers crossed that the toning will be photographed properly.
  • Coins are at PCGS.

Only took 7 days this time.
  • I asked for photos of these coins - will they still take photos of the cleaned coins ?

So I assume all the cleaned coins were body-bagged? I know it can't be any other way, but it's still sad. ANACS will slab them though.

  • Great - I'll post the pics when I get them.

I've seen a few people send coins to NGC to slab when PCGS has bodybagged them - I wonder if that's an option. First I'll have too see what was wrong with the coins though. I'd say the '97 Shilling is AT & the '96 2 1/2 Shilling XF45 - I'll have to have a real good look at that.

Anyhow I must say I'm a little dissappointed but it'll be an excellent learning opportunity.

Good luck on the grades. These are some of my favorite silver coins and
am just in awe of the 1 shilling design.

I've always thought they are underappreciated as well. South Africa was
a very important place at the end of the 19th century and contributed greatly
to science and the arts. The coins were well used and few seemed to have
escaped wear taking them down to VG or F. The later dates aren't as bad
but they are still pretty tough even as type coins. It's a wonder that coins
like this don't command a great deal more attention.

  • cladking - I think South African coins are lagging the market by a good number of years. Our time will come.

Something cheered me up this evening and that is my 1897 2 1/2 Shilling MS63...........as far as I know the highest 1897 2 1/2 Shilling is an MS64.......which makes mine in 2nd place. image
