What was your first MLB game you attended?

I remember back in 1975 or 76, my old man took me to see the Pirates at Three Rivers stadium, Rick Reuschel shut them out 1-0. I thought what a boring game, little did I know, this game would become my life passion. I love reading in Baseball Digest about first games attended, would love to see more here, fire away!!

I attended a game in Toronto at the old Exhibition Stadium ("the mistake by the lake") in 1980. The Blue Jays played against the Kansas City Royals. I don't remember much aside from Willie Wilson and the late Al Cowens. Funny, I don't have any recollection of George Brett at that game at all.

I was 8 years old. My grandfather took me to the game and I had to have a tooth pulled in the morning before the game. I don't remember why I had to have a tooth pulled at such a young age, but a remember how diligent he was at making me change the gauze.

We arrived at Wrigley early and my grandpa surprised me and I was able to go on the field and participate in a kids event prior to the start. I was assigned to center field as they gave kids positions to go to and the player who was starting at that spot then came out and talked to the group of kids at their position. So Bobby Dernier came out to chat with us and I was in awe. I remeber that I hoped to go to 1st base and meet Leon Durham but I didn't get the chance.

I am not sure of neither the date nor the opponent but I do remember that when we were leaving my grandpa reached for his wallet for us to take the EL back upto the Skokie Swift and his wallet was gone. We went to the police station on Addison and Halsted, about 1-2 blocks from the field to fill out a report. We were there for hours because my father had to come and get us and they lived about an hour north of Chicago. I remember my grandpa was giving out tips on the horses and all the cops at the station were enjoying his company there. It actually made me proud because I was scared and at 8 years old policemen were like celebrities and these guys were treating my grandpa like he was the celeb. I guess that was just the kind of guy he was, he made everyone feel comfortable and important.

That was also the first time I puffed on his cigar. My mom would kill him if he hadn't already passed. Giving an 8 year old a pull on.the stogie. That was a good day.

It was probably in the mid 60s when I was about 7.

Connie Mack Stadium, Phils and Orioles used to play an exhibition a few days before the regular season began. This of course was before inter-league play.

1956 Cubs and Dodgers at Wrigley. Dodgers won 2-1 on home run by Roy Campanella. The following year saw Warren Spahn of the Milwaukee Braves shut out the cubbies.

Back in '78. The Red Sox was (still) on top of the AL East at the time. It was the (unreserved) bleacher seats and the ticket only cost me $2.00 (about 8 packs of bubblegum cards back in the day). It was "backpack" day in which kids 12 and under got a red, vinyl backpack with the Red Sox logo on it. I think my brother still has his in the attic somewhere. Me, I used it and it fell apart within weeks. Anyway, all I can remember about the game itself was that Dennis Eckersley was the starting pitcher and that we played against the Toronto Blue Jays. Eck won that day and went on to win 20 games for the year.

Ironically, the only other time I ever attended a game with the Blue Jays being the opposing team was last week. That was the game in which the Sox lost 7 to 6 and Papelbon's streak of scoreless innings ended.

Probably about 1962 or 1963 at Tiger Stadium (might have still been called Briggs Stadium at that time, not
sure). Anyway. it was a cub scout thing where we took a bus from the Lansing area down to Detroit.
No freeway at that time so it was rather slow going down old US16 (Grand River Ave.) to get there.

Don't remember who the Tigers were playing or who won the game, I do remember being impressed
by the immense size of the place and the huge crowd of people. One of the dads got two foul balls
that he gave to his sons.

Wow, so the Cubs didn't have that great of an offense back then, either, huh? And I thought it was just limited to the past 10 games this year image

Both my brother and myself became diehard ChiSox fans in the 50's. To say we weren't impressed is an understatement. image
  • Kinda hazy but it was a Phillies game at Veterans Stadium? in the mid 70's (1974 or 1975) as I was attending elementary school in Cherry Hill, NJ at the time. My uncle took us to the game. Since we didn't have a major league team in Indianapolis, IN, I didn't attend another game for a long time. In the mid to late 80's I drove down to Cincinatti to see the Reds play. image

Wow, what a great thread!!!!! I never expected so many replies, just one day of replies...over a dozen responses.

My 2nd game was a double header with the Pirates and Reds in 1975, both games were slug fests, there must have been close to a total of 50 runs scored that day. Sad, I don't remember who won, but it was nice to see them meet again in the playoffs later that year. I remember Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, Dave Concepcion, Johnny Bench, Cesar Geronimo, Wille Stargell, Richie Hebner, Dave Cash. What a great day that was.

1964 Yankee Stadium - bat day. Was handed a Tom Tresh bat, but my DAD flipped the guy a fin to give me a Mantle bat.
Proud of my 16x20 autographed and framed collection - all signed in person. Not big on modern - I'm stuck in the past!

Saw a couple of games in 1967 at Connie Mack when our area had the ol' "excursions" when you could ride the bus and get your ticket for 8.00. Both games the Phillies were playing the Dodgers. I remember holding my hot dog sideways during the game (like the kid on the yearbook) hoping a camera would put me on TV. The highlight of the day was watching Johnny Briggs and Willie Davis hitting some monster shots out in BP. The broken windows made Connie Mack look like a run down factory when we were riding past, but when you walked out and saw the diamond at field level, it was like you were entering another world.....
  • Back in 1987, I helped my dad for a whole weekend building up the yard level in our backyard for a garden and drainage, and out of surprise, he and I went to a Tigers/Yankees game at Tiger Stadium, I saw Matt Nokes hit a homer. Sadly, that was the only game he and I ever went to, because he passed away a couple years later, but it was great, only wish there were more. My dad quit taking in games because he got tired of the "money" in the game, and was more used to players like the great Al Kaline. Then, I did not understand about what he meant about the money, now I do, I fully understand why he would not pay for games anymore, but the one time we went, I had a blast!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1966 - White Sox vs. Senators at old Comiskey. Im a Cubs fan, but my dad liked to go to Sox games. I remember Tommie Agee hitting a foul ball two rows in front of us and Ken Berry hitting a homer which led to the fireworks. I believe the Sox won. I was about 6 or so
  • First game I saw was at Fenway Park.... Twins/ Red Sox... Gary Gaetti hit two monster homers....over the green monster and some guy climbed up from the stands, into the netting behind the wall to get one of them lol. that was the twins with Puckett, Brunansky....was probably 85' 86....

Hey, I think I might have been at that game as well. The Red Sox did lose that game, right? I remember the two Gaetti HRs, but not the guy who climbed into the netting. Then again, I was in the grandstand seats so I could have missed him.

I dont remember the exact game but I know it was in the mid-seventies, I remember my Grandfather taking the family to Fenway park and eating hot dogs and peanuts, my fondest memory is the pre-game show some of the ball players would do during warm ups like throwing the ball high in the air and taking a step forward and catching the ball behind their back.

When I lived in Connecticut as a youngster, 1962 at Yankees Stadium, Yankees versus the Tigers. Yankees won I believe it was 2 -0. No homers so it was a little dissapointing because of course I was hoping to see a Mantle or Maris home run.

Back then the games were on TV during the regular season almost always strictly on weekends and sometimes only one on a Saturday or Sunday. I had watched a number of games but usually was outside playing during this time...usually playing baseball. Remember, at the 7th inning stretch the program on TV always cuts to a commercial, so I had never seen one before or really knew what it was. At the game, I remember everyone suddenly standing up in the middle of the seventh inning when of course no baseball was in action and I'm thinking WTF is going on here? - LOL
