a bit overgraded. I find it irritating they list things like "'53 Redman Al Rosen 5" and then you find out they are using a 1-10 scale for raw to make it seem like they are graded, slabbed cards. I just skip over their auctions now.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • There are some sellers out there that buy accurately graded cards on Ebay and then relist them a few weeks/months later at higher opinionated grades. Enough said.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

It's unfortunate that buying raw can be such a crapshoot. If you want to estimate a grade then give me a large scan and tell all of the good and bad points of the card.

Me, I'm not too picky - looking for 59s in 7 or better. A graded 7 isn't hard to get, but I'd like to find some raw cards instead of buying all graded to assemble the set.

Bought a Don Larsen last week. One of four from the same seller. Yeah it has no creases, unless one shows up under high magnification. Yeah, the corners are lightly touched. But, the seller did not mention the two small wax stains, or the dimple on the front surface.

Didn't pay a ton for the card, but this doesn't sit well with me.

Some of the dealers overgrade and overprice. I can understand their thinking. Someone will make an offer.

I just want to put together a bulk order for grading rather then pay the $15 or wait for a special.

Suggestions on the better dealers who will work with you?

    Keith

  • I have a whole list of dealers who I don't buy from anymore because of overgrading tactics. About the only pre-72 raw dealer I can praise is mecardascia. Never went wrong with one of his cards.

I don't know of many raw dealers anymore, but here's a few I've been very happy with-

Mark Macrae- used to consistantly get #1 or #2 on VCBC's dealer polls, with good reason.
Set Builders- Great cards, and Joe is one of the nicest guys you'll meet
    Mickey's- Great service, accurate grading
Keith Abrams (andiehaley on ebay) A1 all the way across, just sorry he doesn't deal in the era I'm now focused on
Shoebox- the last 3 times I bought a raw Ex card from Wayne and Bill they came back as 7, 7, and a 6. I think the 6 should've been a 7 as well. Wayne told me he won't promise a particular grade, but will always guarantee it will grade.

    Thanks.

Bought some SGCs from andiehaley to cross over to PSA and I'll keep an eye out for more.

The others I have watched and will have to contact.

Mark Macrae - his Ebay ID or website?

  • Bought a card from them it came back trimmed. they essentially told me Tough Sh**. I would personally avoid at all costs and recommend other ebayers to do the same.

I've purchased several very nice raw items from them, no problems.

As a matter of a fact, great deals can often be had from them because most if not all of their listings have opening bids at their reserve levels which often scares a lot of potential buyers away and limits bidding. I've won several auctions from them as the sole bidder, just meeting their price which I felt was very reasonable.

I've bought several autographed cards from them and wasn't happy w/ the condition. They did offer to exchange or refund my $.

In my opinion I have bought several raw cars from Mike Wheat through the years and of all the sellers of raw cards his cards appear to be graded quite accurately.

I've only purchased one card from CMS, a Diamond Stars Hank Greenberg autographed card. It was about one grade lower than they described (PSA/DNA 4 versus their 5), but I was ok with it.

  • A year ago they sold me a bleached 1915 CJ Johnson... CMS refused complete refund and grading fee. Negative left. Be very careful

I saw that and in fact it was one of the reasons I asked for opinions.

Many of the raw 59s from them that ended yesterday went unsold.

Thanks for all of the input gentlemen.

One of these days I'll get the 59s in the Registry. Want to start with at least 50 cards, which will be very soon. Unfortunately it looks like I have begun a set that is hot with some heavy hitters at the moment. My expectation for 7s is not a problem, but some of the 8s are going for crazy prices.

I bought 3 raw 1957 commons from them about a year ago, all advertised as NM. 2 clearly were not, so I sent them back and got a refund without any questions asked.

Colorado Mountain Sports, Kruk Cards, Kit Young, etc. - they're all old school dealers, they do their own "grading" and they're ALWAYS too liberal.

Lists ungraded cards in the graded section and assigns number grades. This is intended to mislead people no doubt.
