Serbian coins question

Hello all,

My 2001 Krause lists the silver Serbian 50 Para and 1 Dinar from 1915 as having two varieties - a regular, medal struck variety and a variety lacking the designer's signature.

However, in newer versions of the catalog a third variety appears, with a coin rotation. A friend of mine with a slightly newer Krause looked up the 50 Para and claims that no value is given in the catalog... then, both my coins from 1915 have the coin rotation.

Does anyone have the latest Krause values for these coins and actually know how scarce they are? I've seen at least one coin labelled as having coin rotation on Ebay, so they shouldn't be exceedingly rare.

THe 2006 (33rd) Krause lists four types of both the 1915 50 para and 1915 1 dinar: coin/with, coin/without, medal/with and medal/without. Both "coin alignment" variants in both denominations are given no catalogue values.

  • Thanks for the reply.

I assume that the coin/medal varieties exist only for the 50 Para and 1 Dinar from 1915 and exclude other dates and the 2 Dinara?

Yes, the "errors" only occur on 1915 coins, but all four types occur in the 2 dinara 1915 series as well, though this time it's "coin/with" (KM#26.3) that's actually the cheapest of the four - only "coin/without" has no price listed.

  • Thank you for clearing that up.

Now that 6 more varieties to look for.

  • According to the new 2006 Mandic catalog:

    50 para
22.3a coin alignment, with SCHWARTZ signature, mintage 12,137,928 (€6 in UNC)
22.3b coin alignment, without SCHWARTZ signature, mintage 1,862,072 (€8 in UNC)

    1 dinar
23.3a coin alignment, with SCHWARTZ signature, mintage 10,687,711 (€4 in UNC)
23.3b coin alignment, without SCHWARTZ signature, mintage 2,312,304 (€15 in UC)
R25 medal alignment (value given as €500) [R designations are for patterns, trials, and errors]

    2 dinara
24.3a coin alignment, with SCHWARTZ signature, mintage 4,174,142 (€10 in UNC)
24.3b coin alignment, without SCHWARTZ signature, mintage 825,858 (€40 in UNC)

so, according to Mandic, the only medal alignment piece is the 1 dinar, which is considered an error.

  • And oddly enough Krause lists the types as medal struck and indeed the other years that I have from these types are with medal allignment.

  • Yes, all the other years are medal alignment. The only coin alignment issues are the 1915 issues from Paris.
