To me, it hardly matters whether it's fake or real. The red flags say it all.

The other red flag is cleaning. As much cleaning goes on in other places, I have found it to be rampant in east Asia.

While I normally avoid Chinese sellers like the plague given the recent spate of Chinese fraudsters on the Bay, this one isn't as bad as most I've seen:

    1. Been registered since 2000, predates current Chinese issues by wide margin.

    2. Decent feedback rating (99.3%) and high overall number of positives given (1,536)

    3. No neutrals or negatives in the last year.

If authenticity was a problem I would expect to see more neutrals or negatives. That tells me that either the merchandise is good or he honors the return privilege (or everyone buying from him is clueless, but I somewhow doubt that given some of the higher auction prices in the last 30 days).

This seller doesn't raise as many flags with me as with others... *shrug*

It could be real, but if you look at the other items he has for sale, it could be harshly cleaned.

Great design, but I wouldn't touch that taler without it being in a certified slab (NGC, ANACS, PCGS, or ICG) since it is from China. Of course the slabs can be faked, but it at least gives me a reason to sleep better at night.
