Football guys - A question about the all decade team sets

How were the particular players picked for these sets? They appear to be a subset of the all decade teams that the HOF came up with. Was there a vote here for the starting team or something? Just curious with nothing else better to think about at work...

  • I just wanna know why Marion Motley was left off of the 1950's set.

I can tell you how the sets were set up...

The players listed on the Registry are "First Team" All-Decade. When the HOF selects the All-Decade teams they are chosen as first team and second team. Take the 1990s team of the decade for instance.

    FIRST TEAM QB --John Elway
    SECOND TEAM QB-- Brett Favre

FIRST TEAM RBs--Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith
SECOND TEAM RB's--Terrell Davis, Thurman Thomas

Marion Motley wasn't chosen to the first OR second team of the 1950's...He WAS chosen to the Team of the 1940's, but since half the players on that team don't even have a card, that set was never requested.

  • Thanks Jason. I never knew they broke them down into first and second teams.
  • Still don't explain why Otto Graham is listed in the 50's and Motley is in the 40's, since both played for the same team and, for the most part, the exact same years, but I'm sure they have their reasons and I guess they can't include every great player.

Actually Its fairly easy to see if you dig into the history of these guys...

Motley played from 1946-1955...He missed the entire 1954 season because of injury. His only really GREAT season during the 1950s was 1950..After that his highest total was 444 yards. From 1946-1950, he was All-NFL/All-AAFC every year, so his greatest success was in the 1940's. Hence Motley WAS named to the 1940s All-Decade team, not 1950's.

Otto Graham played from 1946-1955 also, and had success his entire 10 year career. He was League MVP twice in 1953 and 1955. He led the Browns to the NFL Championship game every year from 1950-1955..Finishing his career by winning the NFL Championship in 1955...So he had the majority of his success in the 1950's hence his selection the the 1950s All-Decade team--FIRST TEAM...

  • I was curious as to how the following players ended up on the Team of the 60’s since they are not listed on the decade team as published on NFL.com?

Lance Alworth, Bobby Bell, Willie Brown, Ron Mix, Jim Otto, Johnny Robinson, Billy Shaw.

    Thanks.

  • My guess is because they were on the all AFL team.

In 1994, the HOF committee voted ona new Team of the 60's to include AFL AND NFL players on the same team rather than have 2 separate teams. That is the team that was requested rather than having 2 watered down NFL and AFL Teams of the 60's.

Are there other players not listed - i.e. a 2nd team?

They never announced a "2nd Team", but they voted much like the writers do the AP All-Pros. I can type up the next guys at each position who had the next most votes. I guess that would be 2nd team, thats how they do the All-Pros.

Here ya go..The Unofficial, never named 2nd Team..lol

    RB- Lenny Moore
    FB- Jim Taylor
    WR- Don Maynard

    TE- Mike Ditka
    OT-Bob Brown
    OT-Roosevelt Brown
    OG-Jim Parker
    OG-Gene Hickerson
    C-Jim Ringo

    DE-Gino Marshetti
    DE-Rich Jackson
    DT-Alex Karras
    DT-Tom Sestak
