Did I get screwed on ebay?

I've just started buying cards on the bay so I'm not really sure about all the in & outs, thought some of you could help me out. Here's the deal: I wanted an item bad, so all the bids were in the $10.00 range, so about a mintue before auction close, i put in a bid of $61.00. Now imagine my surprise when seconds latter I won the auction , but For $61.00! Someone had put a last second bid of $60.20 in to force me to spend 100% of my bid. Now don't get me wrong, I'm happy I won, but I wonder if there's a way the seller or anyone else could see how much I entered and then "forced" me to spend it all? Here's the way it went down-
US $61.00 May-04-06 19:08:11 PDT

US $60.20 May-04-06 19:09:36 PDT

US $22.00 May-04-06 19:09:32 PDT

US $17.50 May-04-06 19:09:21 PDT
...and some smaller bids earlier on.

So tell me, is something fishy?

  • Sounds like someone had the same idea as you. There is no way to see what someone else has put up for a high bid amount. image

  • nah u didnt get screwed. Its just luck of the draw I guess. Another person was willing to spend 60.20 for the card.

I have been on the other side of the coin where someone put in say a maximum bid for 10.00. I would set a bid at the last second for 10.07 and win the auction by 7 cents. It doesn't mean that I knew the max of the other bidder's. I was just willing to spend a lil over 10 dollars for the card and got lucky that I barely outbid the other person.

  • Was it the same person that put in the $22.00 and $17.00 bids? Post a link to the auction. image

Nothing seems fishy to me. You just both were willing to pay just about the same amount. If you had only bid $60, he would have gotten it.

You did bid with too much time left though. Make sure you get your bid in with less than 8-10 seconds. In this case, it wouldn't of given him the time to put in three bids like he did.

the ebay word of the day for you is snipe. in one auction you can your annual subscription cost. it will get your bids in when you are sleeping, working, at your kids game, in church or when you forgot that the item you wanted to bid on just ended 10 minutes ago. it also helps avoids sticking your high bid out there so early.

there are many quality services i choose bidnapper.com.

    hope this helps.

Auctions often increase substantially in the last minute. This is due to automated snipes and also people that manually bid the last minute. Good luck!

Awesome, thanks for the help guys!
  • You might wanna try www.justsnipe.com

They offer a free service that allows you to snipe 5 auctions per week(I believe they bid for you 8 seconds before auction close). I use this and have been pleased with their service. (also sniping 5 times a week regulates my ebay spending habits too!)

I agree. For $5.00 per month, you can place unlimited orders timed at 5 secounds. I actually think Ebay may own this one . Anyone know ?

Its happened to me also.Bidding on a Baseball Register from 1954 I thought I had placed a sure win bid until it was over and some other bidder won quite overpaid I would have been glad to overpay myself had I won it.

I started to sign up for a snipe service a few months ago and, when I got to the part of providing my eBay login ID and password, I got cold feet. It sounds like quite a few people have had some success with no ID/Password theft problems, so I may have to try it again...

  • HH-

I felt the same way when i first signed up for the sniping service...but since ebay is firewalled at my work during business hours I had to find something that would help me win these auctions that I wanted! Well if you don't like the service or use it for awhile and stop doing so, you can always change your ebay pwd and the sniping service won't know the new pwd. So far I have been quite happy with www.justsnipe.com (no I don't have any affiliation with the companyimage

    donnnster,

Ya talked me into it. I just signed up and have a test snipe set up to bid in less than 20 minutes. I've got a more important auction I want to win tonight, so a little test snipe will give me some confidence in setting it up for tonight. If this works well, I may have to sign up for the unlimited # of snipes!!

Thanks for your help -- I think. I'll probably be spending more money -- but less time -- on eBay!
