Haven't heard much about it. Apparently there is no major "buzz" about any of the horses.

that will be a very, very nice hit if it comes through!
<< <i>We'll see what happens. Jazil had a few strong workouts about two weeks ago, so I jumped on him for $100 at 45-1. GOOOOO JAZIL! >>

That $25 on Brother Derek has wings. Whenever a favorite drifts up to 8 - 1 odds...forget about it...NEVER wins.
you see the pay out on the tri and ex. wow 2$ wins like 10k
<< <i>oh well out 54$ but it was fun. 20 horses is way to many. you get boxed in its over.

WOW! What a race by Barbaro. And a REAL bummer about Jazil. He's a dead closer, which is usually great in the Derby, but he got off to that horrible start. 'Coulda woulda shoulda', I guess, although I'd like to know what my horse would have done if he wasn't in 20th at the 1/4 mile. The fact that he finished as high as he did is evidence that I had a good horse, but like you said-- if you get boxed in just kiss it goodbye.
Could we have a triple crown winner this year?

Maybe. How long has it been?

Affirmed was the last to do it in 1978.

I was there at Belmont Park. I lost a lot, A LOT, of money on Alydar to win. It was the only time I ever lost a big bet whereby I wasn't a little or a lot hissed off afterwards - the race was that good - still the best horse race I ever saw.

to see where the nearest horse was? It was no competition as Secretariat was way out in front.
<< <i>Anyone remember that famous photo of the jockey on Secretariat at the Belmont in 1973 looking over his shoulder >>
Yep, the greatest race ever run in horse racing in my opinion.
<< <i>Anyone here who had a bad Derby day can take heart in the fact that it could have been much, much worse. For instance, look at what happened to the guy in this thread:

If understanding parimutuel wagering, it would be clear why bookies who don't participate in the parimutuel pools have to do this. Even one extra ticket on a trifecta or superfecta, could mean a swing of many thousands of dollars on the payout. At a small track, there sometimes can be only one winning ticket on a trifecta or superfecta which for example sake say pays $10,000 - with an extra ticket in the mutual pool it would then only pay $5,000 therefore the bettors with certain exotic bets would actually have a huge advantage over these bookies. I promise you, the bookies will NEVER allow a bettor to ever have an advantage over them. They've got every conceivable angle covered and they can't be beat...by anyone...and that includes all sports betting.

I say the Affirmed/Alydar race but I respect your opinion. But can a race won by 31 lengths be considered a great race? More in my opinion like a great event as Secretariat in 1973 was the first Triple Crown winner since Citation I believe it was 1948. I was also at Belmont Park when Seattle Slew won the Triple Crown the year before Affirmed. I didn't miss Seattle Slew that day - had him very big to win. With three Triple Crown winners in the 70's, who would have thought that up to 2005, there wouldn't be another one? My gut feeling is that Barbaro will not win the Triple Crown and actually is the type of horse that could very well bounce in the Preakness. We'll see.

In terms of it being a close exciting finish, well of course not, but in terms of the greatest race ever run by an individual horse for sheer speed and stamina I'd say absolutely .

I haven't looked at Secretariat's PP's in a long time, but he had one turf race, and I think it was his only turf race, and he won in an astonishing effort. A great horse on dirt or grass...simply amazing! Can you imagine if this horse would have run at four years old?
Secretariat's Past Performances
<< <i>Stevek, his last two races were on the turf. One of them was almost as fast as his Belmont, and he did it only 9 days after he lost in the Woodward - if you can believe it! See the link.

Thanks for the memories. I'll throw a few memories back at you. Remember all those "experts" who said because he was sired by Bold Ruler, a top sprinter, that Secretariat wouldn't get the mile and a quarter or half? - LOL. These "handicappers" haven't gotten any smarter over the years - LOL. And it was so nice that Secretariat had one of the best owners in horse racing history in Penny Tweedy.
It was someone, I think it was Andy Beyer who stated that MSW first race was one of the greatest performances by any horse he had ever seen up to that time. He said that Secretariat got (I'm improvising) checked, boxed in and bothered beyond belief and still finished a rapidly closing 4th.
<< <i>Frankly, I just don't get it / appreciate it. It seems as if the prerace stuff is 6 hours and the actual race is 2 minutes? Give the jockey's jousts and make 'em fight or make the race longer than a commericial.... >>
It's really all about hitting the exacta or some other exotic and making 10K on a 2 dollar bet. Or at least that's what I think the real thrill is. It's like the Lotto, only it's a sporting event. The only other thing that compares would be something like a 10 teamer on a Sunday, but those are usually ruined after the 1 o'clock games. With an exotic wager on the Derby you feel like you're 'in it' until one of your horses fades in the stretch, so while it's only two minutes the excitement sustains throughout most of the event.

Then you'd "love" quarter horse racing where the races usually last only about 20 seconds - LOL
I have seen the 1973 Belmont replayed several times. Truely amazing.
Secretariat, maybe the greatest race horse ever, was a financial bust in that he died young and was completely ineffective at stud
