Larry Yount

Saw in one of my sports magazines. Played for Houston Astros. Only appearence was in 1970 when he was called in for relief, hurt his arm during warm ups on the mound, never pitched a ball again. Shortest career ever??

  • I've never heard about another pitcher having a short career like that. There was a batter out there that got pinch hit for in his only major league at bat, just can't find his name right now...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

Well, there's always Moonlight Graham. Although in the movie Field of Dreams, the fictional character used the same name and circumstances, he wasn't the real Graham.

Are you talking about that midget (small person) who went out to pinch hit for Bill Veeck??
  • No. Eddie Gaedal got the one at bat and walked. There was a guy for the Pirates, I think, who in his first major league at bat, got pinch hit for with an 0-2 count and never got to bat again.

  • Okay, I must have my facts screwed up, because I can't find any info on who I was thinking of. But I did find some other interesting notes. By the way, Larry Yount is considered to have the all time shortest major league career.

Walter Alston--one major league at bat (a strike out) in one game

Ed Hug--walked in his only at bat.

Heinie Stafford--popped out in only major league at bat

Dick Wantz--one inning pitched in the majors. Died of a brain tumor one month after his debut

Gary Hargis--pinch runner for Wille Stargell in 1979. Never got an at bat.

Mike Kosman--pinch runner. thrown out at the plate. Major league career lasted about 30 feet.

Dan Lewandowski--pitched one inning over two games.

Last year the Cubs called a kid(Adam Greenberg) up from double A. The first pitch he saw hit him in the head. He was out for months with complications from that and has not been back to the bigs. If he doesn't get back, that is a very similar story.

Saw that story in Sports Illustrated.

I collect Adam Greenberg cards--he attended my college. By coincidence, Moonlight Graham also attended my college, but there are no cards to collect for him (he only played one inning in the majors) except for commemorative type cards put out by the Moonlight Graham Scholarship Fund.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

That is just totally bush league IMO. If you're going to call a guy up you have to give him at least one AB. Nobody wants to go to their grave knowing they never got to take a hack.

Unreal. I don't know why that bothers me so much, but it's hard not to pity a poor guy who never took the lumber to the plate.
