PSA Holder Question

What is up with this holder. What type of card was this intended for, not a regular size Topps card. What, did PSA run out of holders for regular size cards? Has to be in the plastic sleeve to keep it from sliding around. Ugly IMO.

That is for a 52 to 56 Topps sized card. I would imagine that the Aaron is a little bit bigger thus wouldn't fir into a 2.5 x 3.5 holder so they have to do this.

They're suppose to use those on "regular" cards whenever the card is slightly oversized and can't fit into the regular holder. I say it's bull. I bet they temporarily ran out of the regular holders so the slabber just grabbed what was available. I've got a SP Auth. Brady rookie that came back like that. The front looked OK, but on the back, the wrinkles with the condom look just horrible.

Doh, I spaced on thinking about that. Good catch, but still even if a card might be a little bigger isn't there usually a little wiggle room in the holders?

Sure looks like cr*p. They should fix that and never let a product out that looks like that.

I have both PSA and SGC holders that look like cr@p. I hate the mylar from PSA and I hate the SGC insert that is cut a little bigger by hand. I have a couple of SGC cards that it looks like the card was wedged into the holder. I also have/ had SGC inserts that have pieces of the black insert floating around. To me the BGS sleeve is really the only way to go when it comes to odd sized or over sized cards. The only reason the PSA mylame sleeve looks like garbage is that it is bigger than the well and when its pinched between the two sides of the holder it wrinkles up . I would think this would be very easy and inexpensive to fix but PSA just doesn't seem interested in doing so?

Ironically all my SP Authentic Rc cards from that year are in the mylar bag holder. I agree with Brian though, I bet there was a period were they ran out of regular holders and just used what they had.

  • I had a raw 1915 Cracker Jack common that I had graded that came back in one of those mylar sleeves. I compared it to my other '15 CJ's and it was in fact a little wider than most of the cards. But I sent it in to be re-holdered anyway just to see what would happen - and it came back in a normal 1915 CJ holder without the sleeve. So who knows, sometimes I wonder if they do that just to get people to spend money on re-holdering fees.
And did they get you to trade,
    your heroes for ghosts?
  • PSA needs to rethink and redesign its holders. While they are clearly number one in their industry, their holders are not. Beckett's holder system is clearly superior to PSA !

I'd be interested to hear from someone at PSA as to why they use the condom.

    BGS holders are too bulky.

The mylar sleeve is used when a card is likely to end up damaged if it were just stuck into a standard sized holder.

Took a few to the National a couple of years ago
and asked if they could be reholdered without them and the answer was no.

Also, it can be if a card is slightly too small or slightly too large.

Agree that they are ugly. I don't want any in my collection,
but there would need to be dozens of slightly different sized holders for each issue in order to avoid using them.

PSA should at least offer a custom holder option versus having to use those sleeves. I'd gladly pay the extra $$$ to ensure my high-end stuff does not end up in a mylar sleeve. I mean visual appeal is such an important aspect of cards to begin with! Take this Ruth rookie for example - $90,000 card and they can't even produce a holder that fits it exact? That's ridiculous.

That Ruth would look stunning in a holder with a custom fit insert.....gee, wonder if anyone does that?

SGC holders are really nice and I would put them way above PSA's
