Pre 1998 Autograph policy. Opine's

The current PSA policy regarding authenticated autographed cards before 1998 is in my opinion ridiculous. The PSA/DNA personnel have enough to work on without worrying about if a 1996 or 1997 Autographics card (Pick your sport) is real or not. This is a extra burden financially to PSA members to get these cards graded that should not be happening. There is no way that you are going to convince me that when cards such as the one's I mentioned above show up for this process at PSA/DNA that the personnel doing the authentication spend as much time on these cards as it takes to "Rubber stamp" the obvious. At $20 a card (or higher depending on the athlete) this policy must be shelved, the sooner the better.

I tend to agree with you. Same issue with the football HOF Auto collectors and the 1997 Upper Deck Legends. I believe there was a thread a while back about an issue with some Donnie Shell autographs on pre-1998 "certified" autographs that were actually signed by his wife. Someone can maybe go into more detail on this.

I agree - the policy is ridiculous, especially in respect of the 1997 Legends FB set. Even if Donnie Shell cards are questionable, it's crazy to pay $20/card to authenticate the remaining cards from the set when issues have never been raised as to the authenticity of the remaining autographs. I think PSA should move to a policy where they require certain brands or sets to be authenticated because of doubts as to whether the autographs were monitored by the company releasing the cards (such as 1991 Proline or all Scoreboard cards). To simply say that all cards before 1998 need to be authenticated via PSA/DNA is arbitrary and precludes many collector's from pursuing several popular autographed sets simply because they were issued before a certain date that PSA decided on.

Hi Guys, This subject is a source of anger for me also. In 1996 Collector's Edge put out a set called "Cowboybilia" cards. All of the cards in each pack were only Dallas Cowboys cards. These cards were of the players from the Superbowl XXX Champion Dallas Cowboys team. Each pack had common cards along with either a card to redeem for an 8x10 Autographed Cowboys picture or an autographed Cowboys card right in the packs. I own the entire set of these autographed cards. The set consists of 25 cards with 24 of them pre-autographed. The Aikman cards that came in the packs were never signed due to a contract problem. I had mine signed in front of me by Troy Aikman at a card show in Edison N.J. so that I would have the entire autographed team set. I also added a special Cowboybilia "Hail Mary" card which was signed by Staubach and Pearson, a signed Jerry Jones card, a signed Jimmy Johnson card and a signed Barry Switzer card to round out my autographed set at 29 cards total. I would love to have this set graded by PSA/DNA but it would cost me over $600 in grading fees and shipping costs to do so. I wouldn't wait another minute to have them graded by PSA/DNA at the new special rate of $5 per card. However, $20 per card is out of my price range. These signatures are suppose to be real or this is a case of fraud by Collector's Edge. Does anyone know why they picked 1998 as the cut off year? Did something magic happen in 1998 that made these companys more honest than 1997 and before? I think that each company should be reviewed separately on their own merits before telling everyone that they are not trusted and hitting us with the bill for it. Neil

No nothing magical happened in 1998. Just when PSA picked to start charging more for auto cards. Thats like saying the Sandberg that I pulled out of Donruss pack back in 1991 shouldnt have cost more to grade either. I dont agree with the cut off date either but it has to be somewhere. Though one would think that they could say that auto's known to be real and inserted or offered by well known companies could be graded like other cards from those years. Do you think that UD put fake Reggie Jackson, Nolan Ryan, Willie Mays and Hank Aaron cards in their packs in the early 90's, I doubt it.

  • I agree I want to have my 96 leaf cert graded. But I am not giving PSA 20.00 to look at it. I gripped about this years ago.
