Brown paper tape for Registered Mail pkgs

Any idea where I can get this stuff? The post office has given me a few roles over time but they are out. Is there a place to buy it online?

Thanks!
Tom

Office Max/Office Depot - Just what is needed and relatively inexpensive.

Office Max, Office Depot and Staples do not carry it. I have checked. All kinds of tape, but not the craft paper kind.

Cladiator - Thanks for the lead.

Blade - I bought rolls of this at Office Max last week! It's brown, a bit shiny, and self-adhesive. The PO has accepted this for at least the last five years for my registered packages to PCGS.

I picked up some 3-packs of white registered mail boxes on my rare stop at a Walmart as closeouts months back. They are complete with adhesive paper tabs and are approved by the post office for registered mailing. They won't hold 20 slabs or anything like that but sure will be handy on occasion.

Did you ask one of the clerks or a manager? Its usually up on a high shelf and not very visible. Plus, it wouldn't be were other tapes are kept. I think its kept near or around the shipping boxes. I did get my roll at Office Depot.

As a side note, its really funny that the post office doesn't sell it since they are the ones that require it.

An alternative would be Insured Express over night which PCGS does accept.

Mike is right Tom, I bought the same thing at Office Max...it's not the brown paper type,

but is brown and accepted for registered mail (I used it for 2 packages I sent out on

    Monday via registered mail).

The post office in Fort Worth insists of the wettable stuff...What a mess...and anything wettable can be
soaked off, whereas clear plastic tape is much harder to remove without detection.

  • I've purchased both kind .. the brown self adhesive tape and the brown tape that you wet and then place on the package at Office Depot.

The brown self adhesive won't be accept at my main PO because the stamping will rub off ... the PO does accept it at my branch where my PO Box is located ... As a mater of fact they even gave me my first roll of self adhesive brown tape ... It really makes no sense as the registered mail goes from my brach to the main PO but they have never returned a registered package as not acceptable.

When I used the brown that you have to wet I find if you put it on your package the night before you send it, it sticks on a lot better.

Also, if you can use the PO's priotity envelopes and priority boxes for Registered Mail you just have to make sure ALL the seams are covered and if you do use any clear tape on the package it must be completely covered by the brown tape.

I also send my Registered Mail with the green Domestic Return Receipt.

The self-adhesive brown tape is shiny so it doesn't "hold" the registered stamp well, but my PO accepts it.

The clear tape can be slit easily and nearly invisibly, plus you can see where the seams in the box are. Furher, it will not hold the stamp at all!

In Rockford, Illinois we have a U-Haul center that has boxes and packing stuff. They sell rolls of dark brown package tape and it is really sticky! Works like a charm. Its the same tape that PCGS uses, except for the string thats in then tape.

  • Great....I went to my local Uhaul and they didn't know what I wastalking about. I bought the 3M kind at Staples and even though it says PO approved on the label, my PO refused to stamp it saying it was too shiny. Any mail order firms that sell real paper tape????

edited to add; duh...found the ebay source referred to above. that guy is going to get rich on paper tape.

I was looking for the stuff last week and found that I could buy it from staples.com for reasonable money...until shipping of about $8 was added on! I was lucky enough to find a case of ten on ebay that worked out to $3.50 per roll including shipping. Ten 600' rolls of paper tape will last me 9 lifetimes, I'm sure of that. Just couldn't pass up the opportunity! I'll have to resell them on ebay when I get tired of looking at the case sitting in the closet.

In my area, WalMart and Rite Aid Drug store carries it. In this area, the post offices won't accept Registered Mail with the self adhesive brown tape.

That's funny...at the one-man post office I go to most often, he requires that a registered package be completely covered (mummified!) in the brown tape!

My PO won't accept the shiny self-adhesive tape. Too messy trying to stamp it and they get red ink on their fingers.

So I'm back to the standard kraft tape. You would think that someone could make a self-adhesive kraft tape that is similar to the standard.

  • Of course Office Depot and the others carry this tape. Reinforced tape. It is very commonly used to seal cardboard boxes.

You can also try an outfit called U-Line for the heavy duty stuff.

Just get in touch with unclewiggly - he'll fix you up. Send him a PM to arrange the deal - very pleasant to talk to, and very reliable. I got 2 rolls in a few days from him.
    Thanks Jerry!

The company that markets a self adheshive PAPER tape that can truly be accepted by all post offices will make a fortune. I'd be the first one to line up to buy a couple dozen rolls. (assuming that with the backing the capacity would be less than half of a normal roll)

I don't know if a group buy is practical, but you can buy it by the case here.
