What foreign coins are popular?

I basically collect English and Canadian foreign coins. I like English crowns and sovereigns. What other areas of foreign coins are popular with collectors? I would imagine European coins would be at the top of the list. And I would think that Japanese and Chinese coins might be popular too. Thanks for the input.

ANY of the European countries is Popular.

RUSSIA is extremely active at this time.
  • Germany has a large following too and it has an amazing range of coins.

I've seen an upswing in interest in British Commonwealth coins, especially South Africa and Australia.

  • I'm with tbirde56, on the US Philippines.

One of my most reliable guides is the growth in the eBay listings for a particular series. When I started collecting the US Philippines about 6 or 7 years ago, the listings ran about 40 at a whack, never over 70. That's grown to 292 today, and I've seen the number of listings top 500. That shows enormous growth of interest.

By contrast, for instance, I was collecting the Standing Liberty Quarters back then (still do for that matter), and the number of eBay listings was also about 40, give or take. The number of SLQ listings today -- 44. No growth at all over the past 7 years.

And more, I recently started to sell some of my middle-of-the-road US-Philippine extras on eBay. I've been amazed at how strong the prices realized have been: at least double what I had anticipated (and I'm an optimist), and on one occasion got four times.

That was with just a 2-sided scan of the coin, no hype. Indeed, no copy at all. All auctions began at $1 with no reserve. The bidders are there.

Brad Swain is right: The US Philippines are hot and exploding in value

I also think the Thai coins are gaining in interest. Again, I'm seeing the # of eBay listings grow -- from about 15 a few years ago when I started to collect them to about 70 or 80 today. And the prices of the nice old coins are on the rise, too, but not nearly to the degree that the US Philippines are exploding.

There are alot of good choices and answers. I collect England seriously. France, Germany and Canada take a back burner. I think 20th century Italian is very cool...
