1985 1986 Star Michael Jordan's

I sent these in 6 years ago and at the time was pretty happy with the grades. I just found them again and thought I'd break them out and let everyone take a look at them. While I'm at it, does anyone know what they are selling for now? I haven't seen them in a long time. I think they are pretty cool looking cards. Thanks in advance
If anyone could post these pictures I will thank them too. Joe

I predict all three will come back with Evid of Trim.

    CSA?????
  • Brian48Brian48 Posts: 2,624 ✭✭✭
No, none of them will come back trimmed. Unless PSA has changed their policy, they will refuse to grade Star Basketball cards. Unless I'm mistaken, GAI is the only remaining grader that still grades these cards and that's only because they have a former employee of Star Co. on the dole that can spot the fakes with any measurable sense of accuracy.

Values of anything tend to plummet when there appears to be only one 'expert' in the world that can differentiate between real and fake.

The cards are real and un altered. CSA was a reputable grader and at the time the only company that graded Star cards. I am 100% positive they are real. Now, back to my original question, any idea of value in 2006? Thanks Joe

That's the problem. It's very difficult to gauge any value because the demand for these cards have plummetted since the problem of the fakes became so prevalent. I'm sure they're legit as you say, but unless you get them graded by GAI (and even then), my guess is that most people will shy away from these cards unless they can get them real cheap.

    Joe:

$100- for the 1985 example? See the following ebay auction:

    here

You might need to log in to Ebay to see it, as it is a completed auction.

But my premise, I think, still remains valid. Given the numerous authenticity questions on Star issues anymore, even if you are 100% sure it is real, a buyer will not be. Which is why these cards sell for much less than they used to [that, combined with the general decline in Jordan card value]

Thanks Brian, I hadn't planned on selling them. I guess when you say cheap, you mean under $100 a piece. Funny how even having them graded there still is doubt about them. And even if I crossed the to GAI there still would be doubt. I think the 8's would cross to 8.5's but what would be the point? I guess I'll put them back in the Basketball box and let the heirs to my estate deal with them. Thanks joe

    Marc,
Those cards sold ungraded for a pretty good price!! I guess these card still have some value to someone. Thanks for brightening my day. Joe

i had some 85 star gatorade gai's graded. they were all 8.5's. i sold jordan for around $150, the dominique and drexler for around $45 each. i've got the rest ungraded.

i like the way the gai holder has the description on top of the holder so when they are in a box you can tell what they are..make sense?

    Thanks,

PSA graded my 86' STAR Carew cards last monthimage

I believe the problem was that they were reprinted by Star at a later date. They are not fakes and that is why PSA and most reputable companies don't touch them.
  • unfortunate, because star cards were big money a decade or so ago, but as many have stated here are lower in value. an easy reprinted card and the lack of grading (sans GAI, which is still suspect in many eyes) lowers the value. I'll take them off your hands if you're selling.

PSA grades baseball Star cards. There does not appear to be any known reprinting of those. Heck - a vast majority of them are worth less now than when they were issued.

At the height of Star mania 10-14 years ago, those cards would have been worth $1,500-2,000+.

If they're authentic, my guess is now, they're worth maybe 10% of that price. The Best of the Best and Best of the New aren't worth hardly anything.

I was a big fan of these cards in the 90's. I thought they were amazing, great design/colors, great player selection, rarity. It's tragic what happened.

Yes they graded all 24 of them. My grades posted in February. Mostly 7's a few 8's and my 9's where straight 9's, no O/C.

If you know what you are doing it is not hard to tell the original Star from the ones printed later. There are many minor differences and once educated, it is like spotting fake Fleer Jordans. PSA would grade these cards before but quit. I would say send them to GAI and you can get decent cash out of them, or if you plan to keep them they will atleast be in a much nicer holder. A GAI 5 85 Jordan 101 brought $711 the other day so make no mistake about it these cards are still in demand and I would take them in my collection any day.

I'd take them into my collection as well. I need some for my player collections, and since I have no plans to resell them--even if I got a non-legit one--I wouldn't know it.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

Guys, Thanks for all the great responses to my questions. This place is a weath of knowledge. I don't know how anyone could collect cards without being tuned in to this board. BTW, I've had quite a few offers for the cards and some were tempting. So I state again, there is still an interest for Jordan cards. not the $2000 that I might have realized 10 years ago, but nearing the $500 mark for all 3. They also thought they could crack them and get a half grade bump on all 3 from GAI and maybe a 10 on the 9. Thanks again. Joe
