Been asked before, but what's hot/not in 70s BB?

Have not been buying in a while, looking to start buying some cards here and there, but for those of you into your sets heavily, what has been hot or not for 70s era baseball sets. I have had my eye on 73s. Not a favorite of many, but I kind of like it, the ugly step child of the 70s maybe?

Opinions needed.

    Sting,

I did a 73 search and saw this: 1973 Topps Candy lid Nolan Ryan

If you're talking about the hottest '70s set, I would say 1971 Topps. If you're looking for a "sleeper" set, I would collect '77s. Aside from '71, they might be the toughest '70s cards to find in pristine condition.

There actually seems to be a slowdown in the market for regular-print 1971 Greatest Moments. I haven't seen any strong new bidders on ebay in a while, not that there have been that many on offer. Seems like everyone who wants them has their 6s or 7s (except me). Cards that would've been snapped up for $150-200 a year ago are languishing with lower BINs. High-grade short-prints still get crazy bids though.

I like the 1973 set. You're right it's one of the least popular of the decade, but the spartan design is really sharp when you take the time to look at it, a nice contrast to the previous year's gaudiness, and the great array of action/horizontal shots stand out. And Schmidt's rookie card, what's not to like?

  • IMO, the stepchild of the early 1970's is the 1974 set. I think fewer people collect that than the 1973 set. I like the 1973 set. It was the first set I bought packs for and has the last regular issues of Roberto Clemente and Willie Mays. It also marks the last time Topps issued in series so there is some difficulty in the last series (#'s 529-660) which includes the #615 RC of Mike Schmidt/Ron Cey (Cey also had a RC in the 1972 set). There are also cards of Ruth, Cobb, and Walter Johnson and Card #1 is a combo with Ruth, Aaron, and Mays. I love the set and it will be one of my future endeavors! image

BTW, I pulled a Fisk 2nd year card back then and I still have it! image
