Gonna collect football this year

I live in Austin, and while I'm not a UT fan per se, I enjoy seeing the natives get all wound up when the teams do well. Brooks Kieschnick, Ricky Williams, Chris Simms, Roy Williams, Huston Street, all have gone on to do well in the hobby (at least Brooks did initially), and locally they are all very popular still. Now Drew Stubbs and Vince Young are coming out and while I'm pretty well fixed for Stubbs, the Vince Young part is gonna be tough. I can't believe the prices Press Pass and such cards are getting on ebay. I know that many FB collectors look forward to Press Pass and Sage, unlike draft-pick only sets with baseball where they aren't completely legit. But a couple hundred bucks for a Vince Young Press Pass auto is tough to swallow. I was thinking of collecting a top set like SP/SPx/Ultimate this year with the patch/autos and whatnot, and I knew it'd be expensive, but they might be up closer to $1K per card, especially if he actually plays. I got a new job this year so my income has gone way up, but I don't know if I want to sink it into this. Could be fun ripping a couple cases, though.
WANTED:
2005 Origins Old Judge Brown #/20 and Black 1/1s, 2000 Ultimate Victory Gold #/25
2004 UD Legends Bake McBride autos & parallels, and 1974 Topps #601 PSA 9
Rare Grady Sizemore parallels, printing plates, autographs

Nothing on ebay

  • helio,

I don't think you'll have any problems with football this year. Should be a great year for football cards. If you are just interested in Stubbs and Young, you may want to go for the singles and leave the pack ripping for someone else. If, on the other hand, you have patience, this draft class may have some high returns in a couple of years. Guys like Jay Cutler (DEN), DeAngelo Williams (CAR), Joseph Addai (IND), and Santonio Holmes (PIT) may not make an immediate impact but could pay dividends a couple of years frm now. Young, Busch, and Leinart will definately carry the hobby early on but some hobby sleepers will emerge. What is tough is the fact that 19 of the first 32 pickes were defensive players and they haven't fared too well in the hobby over the last 10 to 15 years. Good luck to you! image

Let me chime in and ask, "what is the football card set to get" this year for those of us who like to rip packs and build sets? I've never bought new football boxes before. I've had some Bowman or Bowman Chrome singles that were pretty sweet looking IMHO. Thoughts anyone?

Good question. The answer is based on price. For a nice set with a low price point, look at Score or Bowman. For a mid-priced set I would lean toward Ultra or Upper Deck. The best premium set for the last 13 years has been SP Authentic. If you don't want to break packs and just want the set, wait for the Topps Factory issues sets.

I agree but I would also add Playoff Contenders to the premium "to Buy" list. image

    we are forgetting exquisite football!

but I do agree that Sp Authentic is basically THE set to snag in football/basketball. Very nice every year, and some nice cards come out of it every year.

Well I'm sure UD SP is always a nice product, but with a 90 card base set, I'm not really interested.

I know who the frickin' stars are and don't really need any more cards of them.
I want a base set with at least 300 cards because I enjoy having cards of everybody, not just the stars.

Also, since I don't care if I make any money on my case ripping,
I'm looking for a set that has a clean design that I can enjoy and want to collect.

I can't wait to pull that UD Ultimate Collection R.Bush/M.Leinart dual auto/nfl logo patch RC 1/1

That's funny Wolf, because I'm just the opposite. I could care less about the 3rd string guard for the Packers. I don't need his card. I wouldn't mind a 300 card set, but I would prefer additional subsets or "themed" subsets instead of the peripheral players. 89 Score comes to mind with their All-Pro, Speedburner and Predator subsets in a 330 card set.
