I say he's a cinch if he gets 3000 strikeouts. He has the best winning percentage (.706) of any pitcher in history with over 200 wins. If he ends up with over 250 wins, he gets in on the first ballot.
I'm sure you Mets fans will agree!

I'm not saying this because I'm a Petey fan either.
Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12
Looking for Al Hrabosky and any OPC Dave Campbells (the ESPN guy)

Right off the bat, I can think of several HOF pitchers with abbreviated careers that Martinez compares very nicely too right now.
(totals through 2005 season)
Pedro Martinez, 14 yrs, WL% .701, 197/84, 2861Ks, 2.72 ERA, 3 Cy Youngs
Sandy Koufax, 12 yrs, WL% .655, 165/87, 2396Ks, 2.76 ERA, 3 Cy Youngs
Catfish Hunter, 15 yrs, WL% .574, 224/166, 2012Ks, 3.26 ERA, 1 Cy Young
And one can also argue that Marichal should be included on this list as well since he was injured and only played a handful of games in his last two years.
Juan Marichal, WL% .631, 243/142, 2303Ks, 2.89 ERA, No Cy Youngs (could never catch Koufax)
There's no doubt. Petey is IN if he retired today to sit under that Mango tree of his.

Pedro was a better pitcher than Gibson, I'll concede, although when you factor in how many innings they pitched (Pedro's high season for IP would be 10th on Gibson's list), it's not as dramatic a difference as it might appear.
But, when you factor in the value Gibson added as hitter relative to other pitchers and his fielding, I think a decent case can be made that Gibson was a more valuable member on his teams than Pedro was on his teams. Sort of splitting hairs since they were both phenomenal, but I wanted to be sure Gibson got his due.
