2001 Topps Heritage questions

I just picked up a couple of monster boxes of 2001 Topps baseball heritage cards and have noticed that some of the backs seem to have a variation with them. I know all about the red/black back variations, but this is a very different type of variation - similar to the light/grey 2005 heritage variation. Has anyone ever noticed this? I am at work now so I don't have the photos or numbers to post - i am hoping this is very old news, but I haven't been able to find any info on this anywhere.

Second unrelated question:
Numbers 1-80 have 2 back variations (red and black). These are not listed as sp's, and they are stated as having the same value as they are in equal quantities. My question is how are they in relation to the other base cards in availability? Are there 1/2 as many red 47 as there are red 101? For example if they printed 10,000 of card 101 (no variation) did they print 5,000 of card 47 with red, and 5,000 of card 47 in black? More recent heritage variations have typically had one or both of the variations short-printed, but the 2001 red/black 1-80 cards are not listed as SP's. Does anyone have any insight into this?

Thanks in advance for your interest.

There is no intended back variation other than the red/black for the first 80 cards. The low numbered sp's are also pulled at a 1:2 rate, but
TRU, had them at a much better rate of 6 per pack, so they are not as rare as the high number sp's

    Thanks.

1:2 means 1 red or black back per 2 wax packs, right?. There were only 8 cards per pack, so 6 per pack?? Who is TRU?

Move along folks.......Nothing to see here.

yes they were one black or red low numbered card per two packs. The toysrus packs had up to 6 of them per pack..these were
    individual packs, not blasters

I've been debating whether to collect the white backs with my '05 set. So far the one box I've opened has more white than grey backs and they were decidedly lacking in SP's or inserts of any kind. I just received 3 boxes each of 2003 & 2004 today with another box each of 2002 & 2005 on the way.

I still have your email James & will get back to you with wantlists after I open more of this stuff.

    Of 5 total boxes (hobby & retail) from 2002, 2003, 2004, & 2005 I haven't pulled one relic or auto. image

Super, Magellan. Where did you grab your boxes? If you want, feel free to let me know what you might need after all the ripping fun is complete! I got lucky this year and pulled a Whitey Ford Blue Auto from a pack bought at Target. Now, that was fun....my one and only great pull - although I don't usually buy unopened stuff, so I can't complain.

So in summary, for 2001 Heritage, the low numbers (1-80) are technically SP's (scarcer than the base cards 81-310) but don't usually command the same premium as the high # SP's (311-407).

I ask because Beckett doesn't seem to list them as SP's.
