Beckett grading . . .

Does anyone here use both PSA and Beckett services?

How do the two compare?

I have limited knowledge of Beckett . . . Just wondering.

I don't use them anymore. I work in the office building right beside them and it would be so easy to take stuff over there, but for vintage stuff, no way.

Yes, I use both.... although I would never use Beckett for anything pre-1981. I don't care for Beckett's 'specials.' (lack there of) They've never gone over their said # of grading days, and I always get the cards 2 days after they're posted on the site. Ya don't have to label each card you send to Beckett w/ stickers too, that's kinda nice.

ALWAYS Looking for Chris Sabo cards!

  • Our selected then cracked BVG cards sent to PSA came back with the same or more often, higher grade. -They were t206's - 1969's... I find PSA is more lenient than Beckett.

I used to use them, but not any more. I found that, at least for me, the grading was very inconsistent. Some cards were graded ridiculously hard, others seem very generous. The one thing that I used to sneer at with PSA is their discretionary "eye appeal" rule, which I deemed not very quantitative nor valid since it was based on an individual grader's judgement call, but I've since changed my tune on that. I've seen beautiful cards in BGS holders that were absolutely killed grade wise because of their anal retentive centering sub-grade.

In regards to high dollar cards, I don't bother buying BGS graded cards any more. Mainly because they don't guarantee their grades like PSA. A few months ago, I was actually in a situation in which that became VERY important. Just to protect myself these days, I don't take chances.

FYI, there is definitely a distinction in the group of graders that handle the BVG label and that of the BGS. The BVG groups does appear to do a better job and are very stringent. They rejected two cards I submitted as "trimmed". These same cards were subsequently sent into PSA, who is also fairly strict when it comes to catching this type of alteration as well, and graded just fine.

I've used both, but it really depends on what you're going to get graded. What are you looking to get slabbed?

I had a free 3 card voucher. Cards came back what I thought they would grade with PSA. What I really liked was, are you listening PSA? Each slab had a protective plastic sleeve. On the web site they listed the tracking information when you pulled up your grades. Not sure if I would use them again. Maybe to send in that 1975 Gary Carter (another thread).
  • I have never used PSA, sorry guys. But as for Beckett I would only use them on the newer stuff. Anything pre-1980 I have used SGC with good results. Beckett seemed not very consistent with the older cards and awfully picky. I have been collecting on and off for 25 yrs and Beckett seemed to grade my vintage FB cards aka 1970-1972, from a 1/2 to a full grade lower than what I figured they would get.
