I haven't purchased a new coin since March 14.

Its been nearly a month and a half since my last purchase. Forgive me for I have sinned! image

What's happening to me?

Actually, I'm at the point in my Morgan collection where what I need in the grade and "look" I want it in requires some savings/selling. The days of $50-$75 common date Morgans are over for me. Now, everything is $200 and up. I hate this slow down period.

Its gotten so bad I started looking at the new Star Wars figures just to fill the time/void. Can't get wrapped up in another coin series if I have any intention of completing the Morgan series. Although I do look through rolls of nickels at times just to stay "grounded" in the hobby.

Stupid Morgan Dollars. Why'd I have to pick them to collect!?

  • I have the same problem here. The coins I am looking for have gone up so much I need a second job just to pay for them!
  • I feel your pain. I am down to 2 coin per year for my registry sets and thats if the prices don't go up further

Right at the end when I was doing my Morgan set (I sold it in 2003), it got to where the cheapest upgrade I could make would have been moving my 1921 MS65 up to an MS66... about a $600 difference. That's when I knew the game was over for me.
    When in doubt, don't.

Well, I finally pulled the trigger on something last night.

    Ebay Link

I'm happy as I watched this coin for about a month and it was the grade and look I wanted. Now, to save up another 2 months until the next purchase of a not so common Morgan.

If it ever gets too bad, you can always go about the business of selling off your Morgans
(except, maybe a few choice pieces), and starting into something new. That will get your
    blood pumping again!

Selling never crossed my mind. I'm still neck-deep in the hunt for additions to my collection. My problem is, I have no duplicates to sell and the only thing I'd consider selling in the near future are my silver proof sets 1999-present to raise $$ for the Morgans.

I'd have quite a hard time trying to decide which Morgans to sell anyway. I've spent 4 years building this set up and plan on sticking this one out. I'm a "completist."

I think it's inevitable in any set...only one IHC to go...only 3 Lincolns to go...and I'm almost half way in Morgans. But unlike the IHCs and Lincolns' the last dozen or so Morgan Dollars are really going to hurt in any decent grade. Leo

I still need a lot of the common date Morgans, but the price of silver has driven even the most common pieces above my comfort zone. It is kind of unfair. My collection (which I will never sell) is worth more, but the coins I need (and I will ALWAYS need more) have gone up just as much or more.

I would go crazy if I hadn't bought a coin in a month and a half! Luckily, I've been narrowing my morgan focus, and so have been selling off a few coins I don't need anymore- so it's shopping time.... image

People infected with the registry set disease poisoned my collecting; very little is now affordable. Two years ago, I gave up on acquiring pre 1835 material (someone screwed up, as I was able to buy a Draped Bust Dime in 2/05). Then, I started picking up coins which were out of favor, and bought some type Liberty Nickels, a Barber Dime & Quarter, Shield Nickel & a 30 P Stander, all in MS 66 (the Stander was FH 6).

Other than an odd type Liberty Nickel (am still missing the 01, 02, 03, 05 & the 11 & 12 P), I can't find anything else. Bought one coin in the last six months, two in the last eleven months. The easiest coin for me to find is a Barber Half in 5 or 6, and it's not easy, as I've been looking for one for the last three years, and will not pay stupid money for one of them.

Maybe it is a good time to take a hiatus and wait for the right coin at the right price. There are still bargains out there you just have to find them.

Yeah, I've notice the time periods between purchases are getting longer these days. My hiatus, as rec78 mentioned, is not intentional. Its more a factor of the difficulty in finding nice, original pieces in 62-65 grade and at the prices I'm willing to pay. I'm glad I'm not the only one feeling this way. Thanks guys!
