Mercury

Considering the recent attention from the finest know example graded by PCGS in MS61 being sold by Heritage at the Central States show for over 86K. I was wondering what people thought of this ebay auction.

I was thinking of bidding on this at one point until I saw the private bids that had been retracted within the last few hour of the auction.

any opinions?

There are plenty of 1854-O $3's around in VF, XF and AU with 400-500 known in all grades, but only a handful in MS. Pricing has been surprisingly strong, IMO, for an issue that is as common in circulated grades as it is. As for the auction in the OP, there are lots of red flags in that listing, and the coin was...well, let's just say that Simon Cowell would probably call it "dreadful".

If you are going to go through all of the trouble of adding a mintmark, you might as well add a "D".

RYK you are probably right. The piece is in such poor condition that there is not much profit to be made by tampering. Just looked odd that the mm is the only bold letter on the coin. Perhaps protected by the wreath bow.
