help with a 2005 S half dollar

i have been searching rolls of half dollars from the bank for a few months now- today i found a 2005 S half dollar. this is the first time i have seen or found a mint mark S. it is quite pretty/shiny. why can't i find any half dollars with years 2000 or following- except for today? is it worth anything more then fifty cents?
thanks

It's a proof coin and, unless it's a silver, it's worth face value now that it's been dinged up in a roll.

The only way to get the S mint mark in quantitiy is to go to the mint and buy proofs or buy proofs off of e-bay or dealers for previous years. Very common and like Russ said, not worth too much.

I noticed that too. As I've been searching rolls, figured I might as well put together another circulated set. But nothing dated after 2000 yet. Have they even been releasing any?

After the year 2000 the only way to get the Kennedy half is from mint rolls or bags or mint sets.I believe none were issued for general circulation. You might find the occasional one or two now and then.

Chances are it's a copper nickel clad proof, but check the edge anyway to see what you have. If you see copper it's copper nickel clad; all white it's silver. image

I have several circulated proof Kens from searching one handful of bank rolls. I kept them just for the novelty of having a circulated proof.

It's worth far more than 50 cents as a "cool, look what I found, who would have thunk!" conversation piece. I can't imagine how it got into circulation; even kids these days should be savvy enough to know dad's coins are worth more than half a taco at Taco Bell.

Collectors will sometimes drop these into circulation if there's some slight problem with the coin, or if it doesn't "make the grade." image
