Help needed-should this 1819/8 bust half go back to NGC for grade review?

This coin is in an NGC AU53 holder. I have no problem with that grade based on the coins technical grade. BUT, this coin - especially on the reverse - is rusted. There are a couple of large rust spots. but this coin looks to have a lot of corrosion. Bubble like corrosion. Opinions? Should I send it back to them for review. What do you think they would say. If they bag it what do you think they would value this coin at? If they lower the grade, how does that work? Yeah- I know- I have a lot of questions.

    Nice 1819/8 small 9 O-101 R1.

I can't imagine that orange crud on your coin is actually rust, maybe dried tobacco juice. image While not attractive, it does not ruin the look of the coin completely.

From your pictures, I am not able to see the corrosion bubbles that concern you. If you honestly think it is corrosion rather than some kind of die pitting, I think you should send it to NGC. An1819/8 NGC AU53 now brings around $600 or more. Personally, if NGC determines the grade should be lowered, I would ask they buy the coin. Obviously, if the coin is corroded, they should buy the coin.

While I can see why you would consider such a thing based upon the obverse, however I think you are lucky to have it in a holder to begin with. My sense is PCGS would bag it because of the spot/corrosion on the reverse. I think you should leave it as-is...Mike

  • I'd send it in. That is rather unattractive residue in there. How much does a review cost?

Have any of you guys ever seen a coin like this being the result of rusted dies? I have personally never seen anything near this extent. Could that be an explanation?

  • Rusted dies leave a microgranular appearance on the coin. Spalled dies, those that are annealed and cooled too fast, and thus overhardened, can spall, or have very small chips of metal fall out of the dies, leaving raised lumps behind. This coin doesn't appear to show either from what I can see.

I personally dont think that the coin is rusted. I think that it was in contact with something metal that rusted.

That looks like iron oxide...which couldnt come from the coin proper.
