Finally... I Completed My Mint State Ike Set..But then again maybe not

Picked up what I thought to be the last of my Mint Set Ikes needed to complete my set.
An ANACS (Yes I gave the coin to Ron Guth for crossover) 1976-D Type II Ike in MS63 (It's gets better)
This coin was found in 1979 in a mint sewn bag of 1976-D Type II Ikes. You ask so what is so rare about an MS63 Type II 1976-D Ike? Isn't that bag full of those rare birds? The planchet would be the answer, for it is 40% silver!!!
That makes it pretty darn rare. Breen says "an" example is known....well this dealer has owned the coin since 1979 and Breen didn't know about it...so at least two exist.....anybody know of more.
Now to the second part of my topic, maybe I haven't completed the set, as there is evidence that a 76-D Type I 40% silver Ike exists, in fact I'm flying down in the next few weeks to see it.
Any data or detail anyone would like to share about this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!!!

<< <i>This may be a stupid question, but how can you tell it's 40% silver? >>
A quick way would be to look at the edge of the coin. It will appear all silver in color. I suppose you could also do a specific gravity test?
The name is LEE!
<< <i>Wow! I just don't know how you continue to come up with these awesome IKE's James! >>
Sounds like a conspiracy to me!

I tried to make a trade with him for it but he would have no part of it.
CONGRATULATIONS James on a GREAT addation to THE #1 IKE DOLLAR SET!
GrandAm
S mint minted clad and silver Ike proofs. All the bad planchet clads proofs where saved in bins/barrels. When a full shipment was ready they would send them to Denver to be used to make MS Ikes. In 74, 76 and 77 a few 40% Silver Proof planchets were mixed in. The mint has confirmed this years ago.
After the story surfaced, they actually went through a batch and found several hundred more. Had they not done that, this would not be a really rare coin.
Hope that helps!

These are neat coins and visually stunning as in the place you fully expect to see the "S" mintmark there's a D!

<< <i>I know that Mitch (wondercoin) owned an interesting off metal planchet Ike. Is his the first known (according to Breen)?

Actually this coin isn't off planchet but more accurately a Philly minted proof.
Six proof sets were reportedly minted in Philly as prototypes. These were 40% silver and
contained each of the bicentennial coins. They knew that regular production would be in
San Francisco so intended to destroy these sets after they weren't needed. Some how
it's not certain just how many were made or how many were destroyed but there is a sin-
gle example of the PR Ike which turned up in a cash register in the Washington DC area.

There are others, one of which just traded hands about one year ago to an unamed dealer from a prominent Wiscoinsin collection. I saw that coin about 15 years ago.
I'm going to view it in the next few weeks.

How was your trip down that mountian on ski/board ?
As fun as finding a monster Ike ?
1976 PATTERNS:
"This year is marked by the appearance of the Bicentennial quarter, half dollar and silver dollar. Proof examples were made in Philadelphia which lack the "S" mintmark. Supposedly, at least 2 complete sets were made.
The only example known today is of the silver dollar J2164/P2088
According to the Coin World Comprehensive Catalog & Encyclopedia, it was discovered in a cash register at Woodward and Lothrup Department store in Washington D.C. in mid-1977. It is said to weigh 383.25 grains instead of 350 grains, thus it was struck on a 40% silver planchet."

My (Silver) Ike (NO S) Dollar Presentation Piece may well be Unique following the US Mint's melting of the other (2) coins. As Segoja suggests, however, there is information that a different (roughly PR63) NO S Ike Dollar may exist (clad) out there. For my coin, there were reports of 3 Ike Dollars being produced before the US Mint melted 2 of them (following the Exhibition of those coins at the 1974 ANA Convention (they were struck in 1974).
James - if you do get to see that clad NO S coin next month, perhaps you can take some images of it.
Pat - The only off-metal Ike I have is a 1977(d) PCGS-MS63 Silver Ike- I bought this particular dated silver (Denver) Ike, because it seemed really cool to me that a Silver planchet could have been used in 1977 when there were NO Silver Ikes being produced in 1977 (as opposed to all other prior years when San Francisco was producing Silver Ikes).
