last year of the 40% silver quarter? 1969 or 1970

Just like the title asks. What was the last year?

And was the 1976 bi-centennial 40% silver also?

Thanks Rob

Quarters of 1965 and later had no silver. 1964 and prior was 90%. To my knowledge there are no 40% silver quarters.

The half dollar was 90% silver in 1964 and prior. Dropped to 40% from 1965 to 1971. No silver 1972 and later.

    the 76 quarters are 40%

There were also 77-D quarters minted in error in 40% silver as well.

All the ones in the 3 pc 76 Red Pack sets are 40% as are the halves and Ikes.

    Regular issue were clad

According to the Red Book, which is never in error, some of the Bicentennial Quarters were only Silver Plated or Clad. On page 170 there is listed a Silver Clad Proof but no mention of it on page 321 for proof listings. Since this book has been completely corrected for the 2007 Edition, how can this be?

All of the 40% silver quarters which were intentionally made were made of the bicentennial design.

There are four of these. There's the "S' mint proof which was sold in a blue 3 pc set, a "S" mint unc
coin which was sold in pliofilm with a white stripe made to mint set standard. There was a version
of the unc with "S" mintmark which was run off on high speed presses and packaged in pliofilm with
out a white strip. And finally there were reportedly six proof sets made in Philadelphia as prototypes.
Only a single Ike from these sets is known.

So maybe there are only three 40% quarters intentionally made.

Boy did I get my wires crossed.

Anyone want to buy $300 of 1965-1969 NON - SILVER quarters. image

O well, no free lunch again.

Actually, 1970 was the last year for 40% silver halves (except for the previously mentioned bicentennial pieces from the 3 piece Mint Sets).

And ALL of the 1970 half dollars were Mint set (70-D) or proof set (70-S) only. No 1970 half dollars were made for circulation. So the only 40% silver halves you could get from circulation would be 1965, 1966, 1967, (no mintmarks thoughs three years) 1968-D, and 1969-D. (No philadelphia coins were made in 1968 or 1969, and the Sanfrancisco coins for those years were proof only.)

As Conder said, no 1970 halves were made for circulation. However, someone could always place them into circulation. Over the years I've found one of each (1970D and 1970S) from half dollar rolls. image
