Remember the PCGS Large Cent that had a "U" instead of an "E"?::Thanks Conder101

I think it was an off-center coin. High grade too, from what I recall. It was in a PCGS holder, offered on eBay but had definite tooling on the reverse on the word, CENT. The auction was pulled before I could place a bid and I've never heard or seen the coin since.

Does anyone know what happened to that coin? Did anyone save a photo of it?

Edited to add: It happened about two years ago (or, maybe a bit longer) and there was a thread here about it. I can't even find that thread now.

Update!
Thanks to Conder101, here's the obverse: ( To see the reverse you've got to click on Conder101's link down below...):

I remember it well, but I thought it was NGC who accidently slabbed it. These are not uncommon as raw pieces.

This coin was the subject of a thread a while back. PCGS intended to bodybag it but it was accidentally slabbed by them. It wasn't NGC slabbed. The label said "TOOLED" if I remember correctly. I don't remember this particular coin being off center. This alteration isn't particularly rare.

Michael, from what I remember, the large cent was off-centered and was altered on the back to replace CENT with a vowel change and a naughty, nasty word.

There was a pretty neat set of photos in the auction body and it was featured here, on a thread. I believe Fred W. was offering it. I've not heard a peep since then and was thinking about this coin over the last day or so and wondering whatever happened to it.

I remember that thread. The coin was a large cent in a PCGS blue tag holder. I don't think it was off center though.
I am sure PCGS took that thread off the message boards.

That's not a unique coin. They turn up from time to time.
  • I think you are talking about the large cent that i posted? That said "Can't Understand Normal Thinking".... You can abbreviate it from there.

I've got one, it's a 1847, I'll hunt it down and see about getting you a pic if you like.image

I know it's not unique, I"ve owned a couple, but it's pretty interesting in such a high grade (they're usually located around FN12 or so) and PCGS holdered.

If anyone wants to see the pictures of the famous off center large cent, I saved a set. I will post it as a link rather than post the pictures though.

A rather embarrassing slab for PCGS. I am interested in what happened to the final quality control inspection on this piece though. image

I knew someone had to have saved the photos to this one.
    Thanks Conder.

The off center strike must have distracted the graders. image
