Should you send OGH coins in for a regrade?

I have some coins in older green-label PCGS holders that are definitely at least a point or two undergraded. (I also have some OGH coins that are properly graded, but this thread isn't about those.) I don't have immediate plans to sell these coins, but rather intend to leave them in my collection for a while. Should I send these coins in for a regrade and see if they grade higher? It's a little frustating wondering, "gee, would this grade 50, 53, or 55 by today's standards?" but on the other hand, as long as it's in my collection, does it really matter?

Do you think it makes a difference if I were to sell them in the future, or is having them as "upgrade candidates" better?

It should not matter what color the label is. If it is undergraded then send it in. If it is correctly graded then leave it alone.

Even if you don't plan on selling now, by sending it in it will be in the correct holder when you are ready to sell. We all know you should buy the coin and not the holder, unfortunately there are more people that buy the slab.

Depends on the value of the current grade and the grade your hoping to get with the risk involved.
  • Some will probably disagree, but my feeling is that if the potential monetary value of an upgrade makes it worth it and you have the funds available to see how PCGS grades the coins again then do it. I sent 7(two 2nd generation) coins in last week for regrade. The worst that can happen is they come back the same grade. If one upgrades the fees down the road are paid for a minimum of 5 times over. The funny(or not) part is that I spent a whole Saturday afternoon going through 22 coins.... over & over again to figure out which ones I wanted to send in.... and by the time I finished I pulled 2 of the coins that were part of the main reason why I wanted to do the regrade thing in the first place. And I found 3 that do not fit into the set at all and will be sold. I guess it has it's advantages(disadvantages) of having equally graded coins to compare.

It doesn't. The only factor that should come into play is future resale. Then you have to weigh the benefit of old holder status on resale value, versus the potential value increase if they would grade higher today. But why feed the monster if they're going to stay with you?? image

  • I would only go for the upgrade when you intend to sell. Why waste money. Who knows what grading parameters will be then.

Right now ..........a lot of OGH on the internet are sold at the next higher grade regardless of what they look like in person.
Kind of like OGH koolaid. Tipoff on this is the hubble type photograph.

They are not all pristeen. I own a 45-S OGH 65 Walker that has become my dear friend and will have quite a few future birthdays with me.
    Have a nice day

I figured the market would go on the coin and not the holder until I consigned an 1877-S PCGS AU50 OGH $5G to auction and it didn't bring strong money even though it was exceptional overall and easily warranted an upgrade. Seems half of the people out there (at least) waving money don't know coins and how to evaluate (stronger than just grade which IMHO many can't do) them. Mikey's "Plastic Paralysis" observation is sickening -- a hobby of buying and selling tags.

Grading standards change and TPGs reputations change over time. Don't forget, there was a time when NGC coins had a premium over PCGS coins. Ask yourself that question when you're ready to sell.
