Bank roll searchers: What's the oldest coin you have ever found?

I've noticed people find Walkers and Frankies when searching rolls, but have you ever found something really, really old?

It may not be your cup of tea, but, the oldest coin that I have found in a bank roll was a 1919-s Wheat penny. Surprisingly, I have found about 5 coins that were made before 1930-3 of the coins were 1919.

I found a 1880 IHC in a roll of nickles. Not worth much as it was pretty worn

  • I found a 1905 british penny in a roll of halves I was searching. Before that the oldest I had found was a 1953 Franklin. I have also found a Un Peso and a Medio Balboa stuck in rolls.

A YN at our local club scored an 1866 seated half off a teller who just thought it was ugly (G-4, toned black with a few hits)! Later, we discovered it was a San Francisco! image

^^^ I assume with that kind of face it was the 1866-S Variety 1, correct?

Oldest I've found was a 1912 Cent in AG/G condition. It looked to be honest wear as well.

I forgot they made both that year. It was a with motto. Not that valuable, but how often does somebody get an 1866 coin from a bank?

I found an 1863 Army & Navy CWT in maybe XF in 1976 in a bank roll in Charlotte, NC. First Union I think. When I first saw it I thought I had found one of the copies of the Confederate Cent.

Possibly the question should have been in the last X amount of years. I say that because when I was a kid, Things like Seated Dimes, Indian Cents, Liberty Head Nickels, etc. where the change of the day. I remember seeing so many things like that back then. I even saved some 0.20 cent pieces my Dad got as quarters. I almost filled a Whitman album with Liberty Head Nickels back then. If I only knew then what I know now.

  • I found a 1901 cent in a roll from the bank about five years ago.
