I had two MS walkers in my childhood collection: a '39 & a '45 - when I retrieved my collection about five years ago, both were coated with a haze of PVC.

Having been out of the hobby for a long time, I was surprised to learn that there was a company like NCS, so I thought I would send the '39 to them as an experiment - and it came back NGC-67!!!!

Remembering that the '45 looked almost identical when I bought it in the 80s, I decided to send that one in too - and it came back NGC-58.

Sorry to hear about the horrible hit. Over-paying for the grade + grading fees = ouch!

Care to mention the seller of these fine coins or did you bid them up to 63/4 level at auction?

It reminds me of my brief experience with a CW2PS. That's short for "Coin World 2 Page Sellers". Not the most ethical bunch in my opinion.

I'm not getting the 100.00 part of each line at the end?

And isn't ncs the conservation deal? Why did they have to be conserved?

And since you got grades, are they ncs grades, or in a ngc slab or what?

    Really, I'm curious.

And I'm afraid I don't get what an "MS55" is.

Shouldn't that be AU55, or do they always preface the number with the MS?

I always thought that MS meant business strike, as opposed to Proof. There can be MS-01 through MS-70 and PR-01 through PR-70.

Isn't the stupid companies starting with MS for all non-proof coins.....

Stupid that an AU coins would be MS-50.....

Sorry you got own3d. We've all been there. The lesson is, if you want an NGC MS64, buy an NGC MS64. Buying a raw coin and hoping for the best is a roll of the dice.

    gil,

i'm assuming you bought these raw @ 100 EA ?

    i hope not

ya coulda bought em all slabbed as 5's for 110.00 to 150.00

    BTW,in 1990 dey was 350.00 bid !

Walkers are tough. Both PSGS and NGC are very hard on them.

I've submited what I felt were solid 65s and the best I've ever gotten back were 63s.

At least you aren't alone in that regard. I've virtually given up submitting them anymore, even though I've got a couple that a few dealers have said are solid 66s, I'm just not going to submit them for quite a while, if ever. I think I'd rather sell them raw and let somebody else take the chance, or more likely the hit.

MS is mint state, used for business strike grades 60 and above. Anyone who uses MS for grades below 60 is going to cause a bunch of confusion, and should be tarred and feathered. image

I can certainly understand your thoughts. But why not try and learn a bit from this? If they truly are not mint-state coins, look and try and figure out what you missed. Tilt the coin down, look right down Liberty's left leg, breast, head etc. and also the eagles breast and leg on the reverse. You just might see these areas dis-colored or a dead look. This is wear. Just one way of many to tell, and of course the luster breaks.

I hope you mean you paid MS-63/64 money, and not $100 per coin.

Even so, you got hosed by the seller who passed off AU coins on you as MS. As others suggested, you might want to stick with slabbed coins until your grading skills improve.

Tough deal, but before you dump them out of frustration, I would suggest you study the coins closely and in detail to see why they graded AU. I'd spend 5-10 minutes on each coin. If it was only one coin grading AU58, it might be a grading fluke, but 4 out of 5 like that means you missed something when originally buying them. See if you can discern the differences between the one that graded 62 and the other AU coins. If your going to continue to buy raw coins, I would also permanently keep at least one of them (if not all of them), and carry it (them) around in my pocket at the next show. When your considering a coin at the show, compare it to the AU58 you have in your pocket and see if the prospective coin really is MS or whether it also is AU. You can learn a LOT from these 5 coins if you can get past your frustration over the grading results. Good luck and welcome to the campus of HardKnocks Univ. It's happened to all of us...usually more than once. It's not a shame for it to happen, it's only a shame if you don't learn anything from it. Good luck.

The 100 is the value assigned to the coin for insurance purposes, maybe the USPS will lose this order!

    Sorry gil.

I guessed from the fact that they went to NCS that these coins had little chance at stardom.
They never got out of the gate, so to speak.

On a brighter note: Them graders at PCGS will never know the difference. Crack 'em out and send em to PCGS... maybe you'll get some MS62s back.

No, I didn't forget about this thread I was working today and just got home. I agree I need to study them and improve my grading skills, I bought them from various sellers on ebay last year. No, I didn't pay $100.00 ea. I know I paid less $ 50-75.00 range I believe.
I may try and sell them later or keep them I don't know, This lesson could have been alot more expensive.

    Thanks for all the feedback
