Serious dollars for a seriously rare coin... image Since 1998, I know of less than 10 appearances at auction... I know of I think 3 different coins that have been offered by Heritage, and one coin was offered in 1998, 2001 and again in 2003...

You could have bought this coin for around $50K a couple years ago.

Geez. All we need now is an 1870S to be sold and we'll have all three of the big boy half dimes sold at basically the same time.

In 1997, the Pittman coin (XF) sold for $55,000.

In 1996 the Eliasberg coin (EF-40) sold for $43000

In 2001, an NGC AU50 (Arguably an XF coin) sold for $64,400

BTW Slumlord... the NGC AU50 coin (While overgraded) exceeds this coin just auctioned, if the coin looks anything in person like the picture shows... though the slab pictures suggest it might look better than the "good" pictures depict it... but I'd also advance that in the last few years, half-dimes have become a little more popular, besides the market in general heating up... seems there's a few more deep pockets going after the cool stuff imageimage

If I remember this coin correctly?? It was offered at auction on two occasions. The first time it didn't sell. It sure would be nice to have a crystal ballimage

I had the opportunity to buy the Ed Price (Logan-McCloskey Plate coin) a couple years ago for less than half of what this EF-45 brought.

You could have had the 1792 SP67 for $95K in 1992. Now where are the keys to my time machine?image

Actually, it was offered 3 times... it was offered in 1998, and did not sell, then sold in 2001, then offered again in 2003, but did not sell... image

A lot of steve glenn's coins did really well. He obviously bought the right coins at the right time.

I know I got blown past on the specimen I was intrested in and even stretched my bid on the floor. Ended up going to an internet bidder with one additonal floor underbidder.

Besides a crystal ball you would have had to have big kahunas to be spending $100K on a coin back in 1992. The market was falling apart then, and still going down. To those that bought in 1992, you lost another 20-40% before it was all over.
