Yes there are crown size silvers for S. Africa. Their denomination is 5 Shillings. Lots of them on the Bay.

  • the 'modern' 5 shillings were minted from 1947-1960 (inclusive).

there is also a 50 cent coin that was minted from 61-64 (inclusive) that is the same size as the 5 shilling coin and is often referred to as a crown (even though it isn't!)

you can pick one up on ebay (if you stay in the later years) for less than $20 almost any day of the week. there were also 5 shilling coins minted from 1892-1898, but those are gonna run you $100+ for a very circulated example.

  • For the ZAR Crowns there are two varieties, the Single Shaft coin and the Double Shaft coin.

The shafts are represented on the wagon on the code of arms on the reverse of the coins.

The Double shafts are error coins as the wagons only had one shaft.

Obviously the Double Shaft coins are more expensive.

Hope that helps a bit more.
