For set collectors, what do you do with your sets when you complete them?

SanctionIISanctionII Posts: 13,268 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have not completed many sets and I still have them.

These include sets I made from pocket change when I was a kid (i.e. silver Roosevelt dime set) and sets I have completed as an adult (i.e. Proof CAM/DCAM Frankie set). I am upgrading some completed sets, but at some point in time they will be done. I do not know if I will hold onto same and eventually pass them to my kids or if I will sell them.

For sets you have completed, what have you done with them? If you sell them, how do you feel about not having them any longer and what do you do next?

Depends on the set and my mood.

When first completed, I usually review them, find a few coins that don't fit, and look for replacements/upgrades. If I've lost interest in the set, I just sell it.

A few sets (Seated and Bust Dimes, for example) I can't see selling at any time in the forseeable future, and I still replace coins in them from time to time.

Once gone, no regrets. If your kids don't collect, you should probably sell them. Why saddle them with the burden? Also, you are more likely to get a better price, knowing what you are dealing with.

I am with you, Bob. My Braided Hair half cents is still lacking the 1856 and that is a very short set. Guess I could be done if I wasn't picky. I'll probably consign it after that. No idea how I would part with my silver dollars though. Hate to think unknowledgeable heirs would not properly represent them and get less than their values.

I am nearing completion of two date sets. I am already planning to keep them for the forseeable future and upgrade coins, based on availability and affordability, over time. I am not planning to embark upon any new date set challenges.

I have only completed one set. That was the ASE Proofs. After a few months I sold the key for a tidy profit and I am kicking my self for doing it (the profit pretty much paid for the rest of the set). I still have the complete date set and continue to add to it every year.

I am 1 away from completing my main focus and just passed on the last piece at heritage now that it is 5K over what I am willing to pay and 10K more than I can afford. I suspect it will continue to climb on the floor bidding tonight. image

    Myself I'd keep them...

I don't plan on getting rid of any of my coins for many many years... Unless its a Duplicate or is a lower grade and I'm upgrading to a higher grade...

Maybe sometime after I retire I'll take figure out what its all worth and start selling it all off, but I dount it... I'm pretty attached to knowing I have a growing collection... I want to grow it big enough, so that after I die, you read about the ""SMullen Hoard"" being discovered...

I like that idea. Maybe I should melt all my DMPLs and make a cheezy Elvis statue in 90% silver when I'm done.

When I finished my proof Jefferson set '38-'64 I moved on to the more recent dates. Then I bought a few varieties. At that point I had to decide if I wanted to persue upgrades or work on something else. I decided to go for a type set. That was a really big goal so I sold the Jeffs to help finance it. image

Once I completed my Morgan set, I then worked on upgrading specific coins. That was fun but also expensive since I almost ended up with two sets before I began selling off the second set.

Just completed my first set and plan on locking them up in a SD box. Waiting for some Intercept Shield double boxes I just ordered.
And, then I will visit them from time to time.

Gee,cant imagine selling my sets unless i was forced to !

I sold my morgan set after nearly completing it in 1979 because i needed money for a downpayment on a house. I would love to have this set now as i had a lot of High grade BU coins in it (this was before TPG's) i Had the whole set except for the 1895 and 1893-S. After i got on solid ground i just kept my sets that i completed and went on to another set. I still do that now. What happens when i complete my last set? I dont know at this time. I have no plans to sell anything until i complete all the sets that i want to complete to my satisfaction. I am working on so many sets that i dont know if i will ever get done. Some sets i have in the bank vault for many years and have not looked at them in some time. i guess that one day i will go over everything and update a few coins-but not many, as i usually go for the grade i want on the first try. I am rebuilding a morgan set but it is very tough now to equal what i had earlier.i still need about 40 more.
Building a morgan set was quite easy in the 1970's and BU DMPL's were plentiful at reasonable prices. Bob

The first set that I completed was a proof Kennedy registry set. I kept it for awhile, but later sold it to help build a Morgan set. I then got hooked on early washingtons for Registry and sold most of the Morgans. Along the way, I completed a walker set with the 37 through 47 coins in MS63 and better, but sold it to finance the Washingtons. Since then I have completed a Buffalo set in F to AU and have nearly completed BU Franklins and VG/F Barber Halves which I will keep. I have no one in my family that is interested in collecting except one granddaughter, who at 14 yrs. old, is taking a coin break for boys.image Hopefully she will settle on one and resume her collecting in time to take over grandpa's collection, whatever it ends up containing.image
