Saving the copper cents

nwcsnwcs Posts: 13,386 ✭✭✭
Those of you who are separating out the copper cents from the zincs, what are your plans with the copper ones? Collect enough to sell for melt? Keep for future generations? Build a little fort? Just curious as I've been saving mine for a while and I don't know what I'll do with them yet.

for now i am simply storing them in a cool dry place awaiting the rise in copper prices and the eventual ceasing of production of cents. if they get melted for the copper it should make any remaining cents worth more- and tiiiiiiiiiiime is on my siiiide, yes it is!

Just counted up all the 1982 and earlier cents in my junk box. 150 ... woohoo! Time to make my retirement plans image

Gonna melt mine in the back yard eventually. Maybe this summer. That really has nothing to do with the price of copper. I saved them to make castings with.

using the copper for some type of casting or some really useful object
like a paper weight or door stop.

i know! cast many neat little busts of abe himself! you could make a mint!

I started throwing all my pennies into a 5 gallon water cooler jug in 1972. I now have a little over 5 gallons of pennies. I have filled 2 wine bottles, the almost two quart size with handle on neck, with cents and use them as door stops. Basically to keep the cat from locking herself into a room some night while I am at work.

Collect for the love of the hobby, the beauty of the coins, and enjoy the ride.

I have been going thru about 5 thousand circ. wheats and am about half way thru.
After filling 4 whitman albums 1941 to 1974 I started filling some tubes.

    1 roll + 11 1909 thru 1919 P mint
    1 roll + 1 1920 thru 1929 P mint
    0 roll + 11 1909 thru 1939 D mint
    1 roll + 25 1940 thru 1949 D mint
    1 roll + 09 1943 steel cents P mint
    5 roll + 0 1950 thru 1958 D mint Stopped at 5 cause they were too plentiful
    0 roll + 39 1909 thru 1939 S mint
    2 roll + 23 1940 thru 1949 S mint
    2 roll + 06 1950 thru 1958 S mint

Not sure what to do with the rest. I have been putting each coin under the
    microscope to check for varieties.
