Do you feel less nuts....

Do you find yourself more willing to show a large coin or a gold coin to a non-coin person if you intend on telling them how crazy much you paid for it?

First of all, I can't wait to see the responses to this based on the thread title. I don't tell anyone how much I paid for any of my coins unless it's a major rip.

I try to make it policy that I don't tell non-coin people how much I pay for my coins. If they are pushy I'll tell them they are in the $20-$50 range. The less people that know my collections true value the better.

And then there are those of us who don't have to worry about anyone stealing our 'high dollar' collection. Lots of people know I collect coins...I always do a 'show and tell' with my history students. They're always interested, but they never really inquire about the value or cost.

I agree. Security considerations prevent me from advertising that I'm a coin collector.

I like to share my collection as tangible pieces of history. Of course, there are security considerations, but I don't think this hobby would be half as fun for me if I couldn't show off my collection.

I find talking to non-coin people (even sometimes non bust half dime people) about coins (bust half dimes) is as useful or enjoyable as someone else talking to me about Oprah

I don't know what an "Oprah" is, but I for one enjoy bust half dimes, all flavors. Heck, I even enjoy Seated Half dimes.

See, your problem is that you are supposed to be talking about half dollars not half dimesimage
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

I never reveal what I paid.....willingly. It's no ones business, and my wife doesn't ask.

    well, I'll tell you this:

the looks from non-collectors are a lot less "funny" when the coin is of an obsolete design.

Ever show "slabbed pocket change" to a non-collector?

did you see the look in their eyes when you said, "yes, but look at the condition this one is in!"

at least obsolete coins are "old"

"Do you find yourself more willing to show a large coin or a gold coin to a non-coin person if you intend on telling them how crazy much you paid for it?"

I don't even like to tell myself what I paid for some of my coins. It makes me wonder how many out of body experiences I have had, or, why my brain shuts down so easily when I see a coin that I like.
