circ. Walker grading is driving me nuts! (BIG pix grading quiz inside) (RESULTS POSTED!)

DennisHDennisH Posts: 14,044 ✭✭✭✭✭
For about a year I've been fooling around trying to build a PCGS set of circulated Walkers. Some coins I've bought already in holders;
others I've sent in myself. I started the set as a way to hopefully learn something about how to grade the silly things. It isn't going
very well, however, and I'm actually more confused than ever.

Here is a picture of six coins in PCGS holders. I would be extremely interested to know what Walker specialists think the grades
are. I'll post what PCGS thinks tonight. The dates, from left to right are:

top row -- 1916-P, 1921-D, 1916-S
bottom row -- 1919-P, 1919-D, 1918-D

Thanks in advance to everyone who cares to share their thoughts!

Hi DennisH, Need to see the reverse of each coin to truely access the grade of the coin. I could guess with just the obverse, but that would be stupid............Rick

Circulated early date Walkers are definitely in my historical cool book. When they were first made I can imagine the parties they went to, being spent over and over again so quickly. People happy and spending and buying. The good 'ol 20's. Then came the bad times and they were held onto and guarded with life. 50¢ in the middle of the depression meant ALOT. Just thinking about how these coins ran the gambet is fun.

seeing VTCoins barked in I'll go like this:

    16 F12
    21 F12
19 F 12 except the hit on the leg is not good
    19 F 15
    16 S F 15
    18 VF 20

Without seeing the reverse, this is my best estimate................Rick

Hi Dennis, OK here we go with several changes to my stupid obsevations as I Told you........

    1916 - F12
    1921 D F-12....possible VG-8
    1916 S F-15
    1919 F-12
    1919 D VG 10.....possible F 12 (up to the looker)
1918 D VF 20 but questionable due to the wear on the obverse

Hope this helps..........and remeber this is my opinion............Rick

Thank you one and all for sharing your grade opinions! They confirmed that I don't understand what PCGS is doing with low-circ. Walker grading. And I feel a little better as a result. image

Here's how the five of you graded each coin:

    1916-P -- 12-12-12-08-12 (actual PCGS grade F15)
    1921-D -- 12-08-12-12-12 (actual PCGS grade F12)
    1916-S -- 12-10-15-12-12 (actual PCGS grade VG10)
    1919-P -- 12-10-12-08-12 (actual PCGS grade F12)
    1919-D -- 15-12-10-15-12 (actual PCGS grade F12)
    1918-D -- 15-15-20-20-20 (actual PCGS grade F15)

The consistency with which almost everyone felt the 1916-S is a Fine agrees with how I feel about it. In hand, it's easily a nicer coin than the 1921-D. The '16-P as an F15 makes no sense to me, unless the '21-D really is a F12. But if the '21-D is an F12 then the 19-D has to be an F15. And there's no way the '16-D and '18-D can be the same grade.

Compared to sending in circulated Morgans for grading, getting circulated Walkers graded really does feel like putting on a blindfold and then trying to whack a Piñata in the dark... at a cost of $18 per whack. image
