are a couple theories about how it occurred and one involves tote bins from San

<< <i>The BiCentennial Quarters were 40% Clad Silver so yep, there are 40% Quarters! >>
...And the heck of it is that there are really three different of these. There are the proofs and two
types of uncs. One type was struck in unc to mint set standards and packaged immediately into
pliofilm with a white stripe along the edge. The second type was struck on high speed presses
and stored for years in 55 gal drums. Most of these were destroyed eventually but a few were
sealed into pliofilm without the white stripe. These are all lower quality than all of the initial issues.
Probably only about 100,000 were produced and attrition should be a little higher for them. These
"high speed" coins exist for the halfs and dollars as well.
<< <i>Were all of the Ikes produced from those years 40% silver and which bicentenial quarters were 40% silver. I assume all of them weren't >>
This thread's killin' me but I'll try it.
The "S" mints were 40% silver between '71 and '76.* There were BU and proofs. There were
also six proofs of each of the bicentennial coins without mint marks made in Philadelphia but
only a single one dollar coin is known. Clad '74, and '76 t I, and '76 t II P& D Ikes appear in the
mint sets. Clad '73 P & D Ikes appear only in the mint set and the '71 and '72 clad P & D Ikes
are not found in mint sets. '77 and '78 clads are also in the mint sets.
The bicentennial S-mint BU quarters were made in a few different sets to mint set quality. Most
of these were in a red or a red and white package with a white strip on the pliofilm but there
were some special sets made for coin shows and the like. There were also a few sets made after
1977 ('76 date) from coins run off on high speed presses. All of the S-mint PR bicentennial quarters
were issued in the three piece set in a blue box.
* Except for the regular proof '73, '74, '76 tI, and '76 tII S mint proofs in the standard proof sets.
These did suffer some melting in '79/'80 but it was not extensive. The proofs were melted as well.
The prices of the '71- '74 blue packs were very low through the '80's and attrition was high in this era.
Does everyone seeking information about 40% silver quarter and halves own a Red Book?
If not, I suggest it highly. It would have nearly all the answers you are looking for.
