Need some ID help...

This holey coin is very thin and 17mm or so in diameter. It appears to be toned/dirty brass. One side appears to match Turkey KM#645 (Cedid Mamudiye), but it does not have a toughra on the other side, but rather both sides appear to have the same design-athough there are differences that make it evident that the same die or copy of the die were not used on both sides. It appears to be struck and not cast. Any ideas?

Hmm, could be a double-tailed mint error, but IMO it's more likely to be either a contemporary counterfeit or a "jeweller's copy".

  • It is a brass replica of a Turkish gold piece that is used as a bangle on Middle Eastern women's costumes or clothing. The regnal year of 78 of year 1223 is roughly equivalent to 1885 but is used on all of these pieces that I've seen.
