Is this quarter worth anything? Please help, not a coin collector

Hello, I'm from the PSA sports card board.....but now have a coin question that you guys can hopefully answer.

While I doubt it is worth much, I have had it for a few years and came across it today when cleaning out some old boxes. I don't remember where exactly I got it, but this quarter is missing a large chunk. It is obvious that that is the way it was made or "minted", as the cut edge is smooth and precise. Anyways, ever seen anything like this? Is it worth anything more than a twenty-five cents? Thanks.

Thanks again,

Joe

There are a few people on the Coin Forum that really know their stuff on error's. I'm not one of them but someone will help you with the coin. Good luck.

It sure is worth something, but I'll let the more experienced collectors say how much.

If you could take the picture from other angles that would help. I'm having trouble seeing the blakesley effect. A genuine clip is worth some money but there are people who do make fakes of these things.

A reverse shot would help as well.

My "gut opinion" is that the clip occurred after being minted, thus making it a damaged coin and not a mint error. However, better images would be needed to render a qualified opinion.

I don't agree. Although not a good image, it looks like the edge is anything but smooth and precise, and I agree with those who think it was done after it left the mint.

Well, I'd still like to see a larger picture, but it looks fine to me.

In terms of value, this isn't worth a whole lot even if real, but certainly more than a quarter. Here's a pretty good size match that sold on eBay for $60

But this one you can at least see the blakesley effect... image I don't see that on the coin presented here, which makes me believe it was post-mint damage...

blakesley effect... What does this mean?

The Blakesley effect is a weakness on the edge of the coin opposite from where the clip is. It is caused when the blank planchet slides toward the clipped area (and away from the opposite edge) during the strike [that's oversimplified].

The presence of a strong Blakesley effect is an excellent indication that a clip is genuine. The absence of a strong Blakesley effect, however, does not guarantee that the clip is fake.

There is an obvious lack of metal flow towards the clipped edge.

Some of the metal is missing. Drops the value to about 20 cent.

Hey, here is a scan of the back (though my scanner sucks, both sides of the cut are sharp, while the one side looks dull in the scan). Though I never really looked at this coin with the thought that it was worth much, I doubt it is a fake "clip". I know that I'm the farthest thing from a coin expert, but I got this out of my pocket change when I lived in Texas in 1999. I thought it was kinda unique so I kept it. The cut is so smooth and the "side-view" blends in so well with the rest of the coin that I can't imagine someone going through that much trouble to simply leave it to pocket change. I guess it is possible, as I collect cards and many people "trim" cards to make them look like they are in better condition.......so I guess people could do the same thing to make coin errors. I just can't see someone going through that much trouble, I got the coin right after the Connecticut quarters came out. Anyways, thanks for the opinons, you guys have been very helpful.

I'm still fine with what I see. Bottom line, of course, is that it's worth what someone is willing to pay. If you want to sell it to me, I'd happily give you $10, but that's not a fair offer (I don't really collect clips, but I wouldn't refuse a large one like this for $10). Put it on eBay and you'll get $25 "for sure", and probably over $50.

Or keep it and have something neat to show the grandkids.
