Keith Hernandez Remarks. Thoughts?

AxtellAxtell Posts: 10,037 ✭✭
Anyone catch this clown's comments during yesterday's Mets/SD Game?

"Who is the girl in the dugout, with the long hair?" Hernandez said during the broadcast. "What's going on here? You have got to be kidding me. Only player personnel in the dugout."

Hernandez found out later in the broadcast that she had been with the Padres training staff since 2004, but stood by his comment that she didn't belong with the team during a game.

"I won't say that women belong in the kitchen, but they don't belong in the dugout," Hernandez said.

Hernandez, a former Mets first baseman, then laughed and said: "You know I am only teasing. I love you gals out there -- always have."

What a dope.

whatever, like it or not I bet 90% PLUS of ball players feel the same way. Big whoppie doo. That comment is not a pimple on the a$$ of what Bryant Gumble had to say a couple of months back. That was no big deal by your words Ax. I guess it is ok to make racist remarks in your book judging by your comments of recent past.

Here is Axtell's response to the crap spewing from Gumble's mouth "

<< <i>Hey, last time I checked, this was a free country where people are allowed to express their opinions. You don't want to watch Bryant Gumble or listen to his rhetoric? Guess what, we have this amazing thing in this country called freedom to choose. CHANGE THE DAMNED CHANNEL.

There's a vast difference between a show with social commentary with sports related comments, and comments made during a game.

Hernandez was out of line in showing his sexist agenda during what should be a social commentary free broadcast.

She has every right to be there as anyone...she's part of the team. The "90%" you speak of is, in my opinions, vastly overexaggerated.

I hear Axtell on that one. Best summed up as he stated........ "what a dope." The comment was ignorant. Gumbel, on the other hand, has an agenda.

    Harry

Word in the paper was that she is the teams massage therapist. has been for a few years. Not sure if that allows her to be on the bench during a game or not. From what i always thought one had to be a trainer or coach to be in the dugout during a game.

perhaps she is a member of the training dept and thus is allowed for that reason

    Not counting bat/ball gal/boys.

Hmmmmmm........massage therapy is unregulated in NYC. As a matter of fact, my future bride lived with a massage therpapist in NYC in the 80's who used to..........oh well, nevermind. image

I could take it or leave it, to be honest, although is some strange way it seemed like the precise sort of comment one would expect from a member of the 1986 Mets.

Keith Hernandez reprimanded by Mets network for 'inappropriate' comments

    April 24, 2006

NEW YORK (AP) -- Mets broadcaster Keith Hernandez was reprimanded by the team's television network for "inappropriate" remarks during a broadcast about a female member of San Diego's training staff.

The former MVP first baseman said women "don't belong in the dugout" when he spotted 33-year-old Kelly Calabrese, the Padres' full-time massage therapist, high-fiving Mike Piazza in the dugout after he hit a home run during New York's 8-1 victory Saturday in San Diego.

After Hernandez found out later in the broadcast that Calabrese was with the Padres training staff, he repeated that she shouldn't have been there. "I won't say that women belong in the kitchen, but they don't belong in the dugout," he said.

Hernandez, a former Mets star, then laughed and said: "You know I am only teasing. I love you gals out there -- always have."

"Keith Hernandez made inappropriate comments regarding the presence of a female massage therapist of the San Diego Padres who was in the dugout," SportsNet New York said in a statement Monday. "We immediately addressed the issue with Keith and reprimanded him, and he publicly apologized during Sunday's game."

Hernandez said Sunday that he was sorry if he offended anyone. He also said that baseball's rulebook allowed only the head trainer and assistant trainer in the dugout.

But a Major League Baseball memo previously sent to all clubs said that in addition to the two trainers, one member of the conditioning staff was permitted in the dugout during games. After Hernandez's remarks, MLB called the Padres and verified that, indeed, Calabrese was allowed.

Calabrese said Sunday that she was flabbergasted by Hernandez's comments.

"It's a little shocking but you know what -- it happens," she said. "He not only discredited me as a person, but he discredited women."

Padres chief executive officer Sandy Alderson also criticized Hernandez.

"Her competence and professionalism, not gender, are the important factors in her role with the club," he said Monday in a statement.

"Our society has made great strides in gender equity in recent years and that progress should be reflected as well in professional baseball," he said. "Keith's remarks were uninformed and were a disservice to Kelly and those women like her who have performed admirably in positions previously reserved for men."

It was a slip of the tongue by Hernandez....an ignorant one but I dont think they guy really thought about what he was saying....then he started back-peddling which made it even worse. Of course he was reprimanded and for good cause because someone in his position needs to think before he speaks aloud.

What Bryant Gumble did was MUCH worse because it was well thought out in his commentary, agenda or no agenda.

But the most important question is.....do I get a happy ending with that massage?

I don't think for a second it was a slip of the tongue...his partner was doing everything he could to bail him out, and he kept pressing on.

And agree or disagree with Gumbel's agenda, at least he wasn't giving his speech during a game. That's why this is apples and oranges.

Gumble is paid to provide his own opinion on sports etc.

Hernadez however, does not have his own show. He is paid to provide commentary on the game. He is not paid to provide his opinion on the role of women in the dugout.

If Hernandez wants to talk about how women should not be in the dugout, he should do it on his own time...not company time.

Im with Axtell about his comments. she is player personnell and should definetly be allowed in the dugout. I would also bet most modern players dont mind. odds are if they played in high school or college their were females on the training staff. the times they are a changin.

I couldn't care less about Keith Hernandez' recent comments.

As was stated above, much ado about nothing.

Hernandez simply said something unpopular in this day and era. He let his thoughts out instead of keeping it in. There are many ball players and people who would agree to those statements, but they keep silent about it for the most part and never express it publicly for the very reasons what Hernandez is dealing with now. This reminds me of the John Rocker incident from years back when he expressed his thoughts about something.

I don't care what "audience" is the target of ANY program on TV. A comment is a comment. What Bryant Gumble had to say blows away what Hernandez had to say. Axtell supports Gumbles racist "opinions" under a smoke screen that Gumble made his RACIST remarks on a program of "social commentary" Am I the only one to see right through Axtell's FLIP FLOP head? While Hernadez's comments were obviously not appropriate, a RACIST remark is worse then a SEXIST remark. What a crock ......

Gumble is paid by his employer to provide insight and social commentary. His employer, HBO, obviously had no issues with what he said.

Hernandez is paid by his employer to provide game analysis and commentary. His views about women, and their 'place', and baseball being a 'man's game' has no place in such environment. His employer obviously agreed, and he was (rightfully) reprimanded.

My opinions about what either said do not take away from Hernandez's comments being out of line for a baseball broadcast. If he wants to make such insipid comments, then he should work on getting his own show.

You fail to see that the context of the 2 broadcasts are why Hernandez's comments are so out of line.

    Again,

I don't need a smoke screen of EXCUSES to know what is wrong and what is REALLY BAD wrong. I don't care if Gumble was in a alley in the city, in his bedroom, or being "paid by his employer to provide insight and social commentary". You are making excuses and supporting racist comments made by Gumble while making an everyday male chauvinist pig out to be the devil.

Softy, good to see you can't see through your hatred for me to see Gumbel's and Hernandez's forums are completely different for airing their personal opinions.
