i like toning because it is unique and no two are the same.

    From James_EarlyUS

The toning factor is integral to the originality of a coin. Suppose you have ten old coins that have spent decades toning in their paper envelopes, or old albums. They are as unique and different from each other as are your children. But if you now strip away their color, you are left with ten coins that look alike, and are not special in any way. Likewise, the enjoyment of raising your children would be diminished if, despite your desire to respect and value them as individuals, they all dressed alike, talked alike, thought alike, played alike and loved and hated everything alike.

What is sadly misunderstood by 99% of the people who buy coins is that every single coin that exists has some toning. Granted, in many cases, the toning is so light as to be unnoticeable, but nonetheless, even a coin fresh off the dies has some kind of toning. So why try to force them to be alike by dipping them? What gives you the right? Let the coins be, and let them become whatever it is that they should become. The smartest thing we can do as collectors is to provide the best possible environment for them to develop.

The same can be said of our children.

Here is what I like about toning, I like the orignality it brings to the coin and the different ways it can look. There are so many ways toning can enhance the eye appeal of the coin, especially circ coins. Toning is different for every coin and should be looked at on a case by case basis. Even some AT coins can be pretty, even if they are not real. Toning works like this for me. Either a coin has the pop to it or it does not. Toning helps add the pop to alot of coins. Thanks for the chance

True NT Toning Is more than just a pretty addition to a coin. Whether it's ugly nasty black toning, or jaw dropping rainbow, toning gives you a "history lesson " on the coin.

now as for what I like....its hard to pick one look. Off the top of my head I would say I like:

74 proof IKES with that cloudy haze look under normal light but if viewed under bright lite or sunlight, put off those circular rainbows

mercs with killer "blueberry" toning on one side, bright white flip side image

weird toning patterns, like textile, end roll, really love the early commems with tab toning

    dislikes: none
ok maybe not none, because one coin which was posted on here a few weeks back. Was a toned buffalo, and for the life of me at 7k+ the coin just doesnt look rite to me. It exhibits what I say are pastel easter colors. Now while that is not a tech term, I have never seen these colors on a buff before.

Personally I think that colorful NT on a coin is a definite positive attribute to a high grade coin. But it must be NT. It adds character and will definitly bring comments and interest from non-collectors! More so than a high luster high grade piece.

Now if you'll award that Morgan to me, I'll be sure that it gets looked at by collector and non-collector alike! image

I like toning on coins mainly because it amazes me that metal is capable of taking on colors and patterns like that!

Thanks for the opportunity! Before coming to this forum I didn't give a thought to toned coins. I didn't love them or hate them. But it was when I saw how cool they can be -- and the vividness of some that I saw -- that I became a toned coin collector. I still am, though I am not active in the area. It's turned into an interest in nicely toned original surfaces. More subtlety, I suppose, is what I appreciate now. Although the spectacular ones are still delightful to see.

Toning can indeed add to the overall eye appeal of a coin.

But how can you judge it subjectively like grade?

I have liked toned coins almost my whole life. Only collected them since a few years this time. My Dad told me to collect bright white coins way back when because that's what people wanted. I sold my nice toned coins way back then. If only I DID keep those bright rainbow toned MS 64/65 Barbers from back then!!!! Now I seek them out more than the bright white coins, partly for my wife's set.

I collect the rainbow toned Binion Morgans and have a couple of nicely toned Peace dollars. My wife is trying to complete a set of rainbow toned Kennedy halves. The only real way to get them is finding an old album that has been sitting for many years. Try finding a nice one! The ones with a lot of color, like many series, are AT.

The thing I DON'T like about toned coins is the prices and trouble they bring. Because the prices have gotten so out of hand, there are too many AT coins out there being made. Many, if not most, are easy to detect. Who would pay 14K for a Peace dollar? Sorry Brandon, you did the right thing though! How many people would? This is leaving a sour taste for those that find out their purchase is fake when it gets to the top tier graders. LOT'S of money wasted! I'm a recent victim too! Got three toned coins from very reputable source, but got BB'd from PCGS. Here's one of them. Just my fifty cents. Ray imageimage

    Ode to Toners

I like those pretty tones a lot
I like them when the color’s HOT
Please don’t say that I forgot
To mention that they’re worth a lot

I look at them here, I look at them there
I look at them almost anywhere
    I know I’m weird but I don’t care
I look at them in my underwear!

On a boat or on a train
In a car or on a plane
In the sun or in the rain
I’ve got toners on the brain!

Those toners make me really swoon
They even make me kinda moon
I know I sound just like a loon
I hope to get more very soon!

I search for toners like I’m crazed
I search for them many different ways
I’m sure that you won’t be amazed
I’ve got more bids than there are days!

I like the look of some at toned coins better than some nt coins. I like alot of others here do not know the difference well enough to make me confident in buying them.

I am toneless right now, But you could change that.

I've always liked toning on silver. I'm just starting to get hooked on copper toning too. The stuff that even looks AT turns me off though.

Congrat's on 4K Shane! Great coin and Giveawayimage Thanks for the chance. My thoughts on toning:

Each coin has it's own unique color that is part of it's history. May be natural or artificial. Regardless of the toning history of the coin, someone will find it attractive. A true collector will purchase a coin because they like it, not for it's future sale potential.

This Kennedy arrived today and is going in my 7070. Thanks Morrrisimage

Thanks for the giveaway. I like to look at toned Morgans and simply admire the array of colors and turn them in the light and watch the change; esp when they are the bright neon colors.

My comments on your toned coin:

good: obverse has bold distinct colors as well as blended colors.
bad: too bad there is no toning on reverse

I really enjoy a nice crescent rainbow toner. Toning adds "character" and makes a coin unique.
  • Options
The coin in the pictures looks great because you can see the reflective surface through the toning. I like toning that is bright, vivid colors that enhance an already nice looking coin. I don't like toning on coins where the quality of the coin under tha color leaves much to be desired.

I can take them or leave them. i generally do not buy toned coins unless very eye appealing and refuse to pay any more for a toned coin than a non-toned one. Toning can hide light scratches or cleanings or other slight damage. Bobimage

Congrats on the 4000.. I may have a few years left to get there...

That is a pretty sweet morgan, the colors are interesting as I find blast white a bit boring. The coin in hand would be nice as it has some pretty strong die clashes.

    Coingratulations on the milestone!

I like toning on a coin which is subtle and attractive, and makes the coin unique. I particularly favor album-type rim toning which highlights the design of the coin.

I agree with Baley. I too like the album rim toning on a coin. But, I as some call it corrosion I have to wonder if it will eventually cause damage to the coin?? Other than that, I love toningimage

    Thanks for the chance...

That is a very beautiful Morgan, bag marks or not! I have often enjoyed looking at the rainbow dollars at coin shows, but they were too expensive for my budget.
I also like silver coins with golden brown toning circling the perimeter of the coin.
Congratulations on your posting milestone! I'm right behind you! image

Many thanks for the giveaway. I have to admit I don't owned much toned material and that is more due to finances than anything else. I find some of the extreme toned material garrish and I wonder about the authenticity but these end toned coins are very attractive, makes you wonder how long the roll was together and where it went.

    Cool giveaway, Shane.
I started appreciating toners after I purchased an 1893-s Morgan in F-15. The most expensive, rarest coin in my Morgan date set collection, yet it lacked eye appeal..........it was a widget! Since eye appeal is what floats my boat, it was a natural progression into the wild world of toners. image

I love th color.......all color is good and has different attributes in different lighting. My guess about your coin is that it was bag toned, it was near the corner of the bag......just a guess....maybe?

I love how color dances with the slightest of twirl on silver. I have several toned coins per bright coin as far as ratio goes.

I don't know much about toning, I've just gotten into collecting recently. I found a few in a couple of lots I bought. I definately have an appreciation for them, especially the siver toned ones. I promise to give your coin a loving home, if you choose me. Thanks for the opportunity, and congrats on your milestone.

    Thanks for the chance kryptonite!
I happen to prefer blast white but have to admit some of the toners are stunning (even non-collectors love them). The only problem that I have with toners is the number of "doctors" out there trying to create them. At least with blast white, it's pretty easy to tell if they've been messed with.
    can't get enough!!!

Likes about toning: adds a uniqueness that gives the coin dimension. Also looks cool when turned in certain lights. Best when colorful and uniform in texture.

Dislikes about toning: could subdue the lustre. Tends to highlight fingerprints. Worst when spotty, splotchy, speckled or brown/crusty.

I love toning that makes a coin aesthetically more pleasing than just the coin design alone. Toning many times can also tell a story of where the coin has been or how it was stored.

All toning is nice, why? If it's unattractive it doesn't deserve "toned" as a description, I just call it "tarnished".

Congrat's on the mile post and thanks for this opportunity.

I very much like the Morgan you've offered. It's a nice looking coin for sure.

Some of the toning I see people going crazy for does nothing for me, other toned coins I like quite well. My coin tastes are kind of a personal thing for me, that is, I like what I like. Some of what I might like sells for what I call "crazy" money and I can't afford them.

It concerns me that the possibility of coin doctors pumping out more and more toned cons might help collapse that market. I think I'm getting pretty decent in knowing the difference between AT and NT, but that could change as techniques are perfected.

    Best wishes,
    Pete
