Just for the sake of slabbing?

Im just curious of how many people here send cards in to be graded knowing they may only get mid-grades? I would assume mostly collectors who dont intend to sell them like me. I have alot of vintage HOFers that I know are only 4s, 5s or 6s but I still like to submit them to be encapsulated just for the sake of the card being slabbed. I ask beacause I rarely see members post sub results that are mid grades. After seeing some excellent vintage subs from some of you guys, I would be embarassed to post my mid grade results.image

  • For most its for consistency in their collection, or for me and many others as well - its knowing they're legit and authentic. There are many collectors out there putting together a PSA 4, 5, 6 set - and they need us to provide the cards for them.

I only grade cards to sell them, but I'll grade to break even just to avoid any potential disagreements. Some collectors are actually more strict in the grading than their services, and I tend to be more strict with my raw cards as well.

    Bob ,
I grade all sorts of stuff for my collection.........just got results for a 41 Playball D. Dimaggio which I figured for a 2, it actually got a 4. This is stuff I'm not intending to sell anytime soon but may someday. I've graded many Yaz cards from 2-6 for the stuff you seldom see or can't afford in a higher grade.

Don't be embarrassed, some of those midgrade cards look great in a slab.

    Did I leave anything out?

    Nothing wrong with midgrade cards.

    Bob,

It'd be a shame to have a sweet HOFer not graded! I did that for all my raw HOFers, and I am very glad that I did. The best was a PSA 6 Al Kaline, and a 5 Willie Mays. Go get them graded, you'll be glad that you did! And post the results when you get them back. We'll put you in the spot-light for a day image

I grade a lot of cards that I have no intention of selling anytime in the near future for a couple of reasons. 1) Good long-term storage which will prevent possible damage in the future. 2) A graded card is a known commodity, the majority of the hobby accepts PSA's opinion. 3) The card is much more liquid (at it's true value) at any time in the future should it need to be sold for any reason. 4) If something ever happens to me, my family would know what they are, especially some of the more obscure stuff.

Thanks for your opinions guys! Hopefully PSA will have a vintage special in May and I'll send a bunch in. I have a Roop box full to send in. I will be sure to post my results. Besides having those mid grade HOFers I have a couple of Mantles in that box that probably are 2s, but I like Mantles in any grade! image
  • Plus if you get a high grade card, you can sell it and buy the exact same card in a lower grade, plus several others you need for your collection.
  • This discussion is what makes this board so great and far ahead of other boards on the web. It's the only place where I can get an insight to this crazy compulsion I have to collect cards without going too broke. Other boards are berift of "Yankees suck" and "Cardinals are the best" posts. Please keep it up. Although I rarely post, I value everyone's opinion. Please excuse my enthusiasm, but I just joined the Collectors Club after two years of lurking on the board and today, I prepared for shipment my free 12 psa's. This thread and others helped me considerably.
