Beckett selling its own graded cards?

Sorry, if I'm out of the loop here, but I was looking at the following listing and was trying to understand it (see link below). Am I right, is this card actually being sold by Beckett? I'm trying to get this straight: Beckett has graded this card and now they are selling it themself?

Beckett does sell its own cards, but that card wasn't graded recently. Their recent grades are in the 419 range.

You actually have the option of consigning your submissions...I guess that's where they're listed...either that or on beckett.com. lol - If I ever doctor up a serial numbered card and submit it, maybe I'll take them up on that consignment service. Just kidding, but it would be a good way to deal with the 'why is that card a 10 when it used to be an 8' questions.

It has to tick off the "Becket Marketplace" dealers that Beckett directly competes against them for hobby dollars "across the street" (on eBay). It would be like Microsoft selling X-Boxes directly on their site, competing with retail and on-line stores.

Anyone know what they do with the cards they buy back (if misgraded, etc.)?

Looking for Jonny Gomes cards, especially Triple Threads and printing plates. Will consider all cards, though. Got something? Contact me at c_u_l_1@yahoo.com
  • The auction discussed in this thread is not beckett and is not related to beckett. Their Id is something different... As for pissing off mp dealers, it does not really piss me off. They don't sell too much on their id, and a lot of it is at fixed price. I think it is a way of trying to brand the beckett name a little more.... Everything is consignment and we all have a chance to participate... As for psa selling their cards, yes at one point they did, but i don't think teh auction business is part of Cu anymore?

CU used to own superior which was an auction house and sold PSA cards on cosigments the same way Mastro or REA.

Some people didnt see anything wrong with it and some people thought it was a conflic of interests ...I personally thought it was a good thing when they sold the auction site.

Probably nothing ever happenned ..but still,... it could be too tempting.

    Is this Beckett's Ebay ID?

Yeah, that's them. They used to be "the_beckett_store," which is why I confused them with the one in the original post.
  • This practice seems wrong to me. It seems to be that Beckett would have great interest in grading a card as high as they possibly can and then selling it - even of they are grading and selling a card for a customer. If I'm a customer and I have option to consign it with Beckett, wouldn't Beckett want the card to sell for the highest amount possible, so that they can collect on it? Whew, I have to get my head of the sand here. How does Beckett justify this?

I'm open to hearing the other side on this, but this seems like a huge conflict of interest to me.
  • Oh, now that is straight up playa hatin'. Isn't it against Ebay policy to have outside links? I guess Beckett is pimpin' like that with Ebay.

  • ebay's Link Policy

    What is the links policy?

Per ebay... Our User Agreement policy (section 5.1) only allows listings to contain "...text descriptions, graphics, pictures and other content relevant to the sale of that item." This policy prohibits links to Web sites, Home pages or any page that has items for sale outside of eBay.

You can report it to ebay at the bottom of the link above.
