    Bob,
As I have said before, anyone who owns their 1990 no S Lincoln cent in a government issued Proof Set right now, should IMMEDIATELY remove the coin from the set and have it slabbed by PCGS, NGC or ANACS. Allowing that coin to remain in the government packaging risks continual deteriation of the coin. Steveimage

What in the world caused that kind of damage on the 1990 No S proofs? It looks like some major condensation may have set in.

Looks like they have now added a 3rd 1909 VDB matte proof at 66 R&B!

Early bidding on these three coins is impressive.

As of May 16th the bidding is as follows:

    Lot 428 NGC 64BN 7 bids, $5,000
    Lot 429 PCGS 65RB 9 bids, $12,000
    Lot 430 PCGS 66RB 8 bids, $17,000

It is interesting to note that the PCGS price guide has the three coins listed at retail value as:

    64 BN $3,550
    65 RB $9,000
    66 RB $20,000

The 1990 No S in PR67DCAM is bid to $5,000 and the two damaged proof set versions look like they might not sell. 15 days to go.

Well, it looks to me the PCGS price guide will have to be upgraded after this auction is done.

    Mike,

Great question. Always hard to tell from pics/scans. I would say some of the minor coloration areas take the eye appeal away froma loftier grade, but you never know.

I plan on looking at these closely in LB. I hope you are correct.

Lots 463 & 464, those damaged 1990 no S proof sets have been moved to the "proof set" classification in the auction and are currently bid at $1,300 and $1,600 respectively. It shows to me that a rare coin like this has value regardless of its obvious problems.

On the 1909VDB Matte Proofs, interesting activity as each coin has advanced in the past two days with no NEW bidders participating. As of 5/18 the following:

    Lot 428 NGC64BN 7 bidders, $6,500
    Lot 429 PCGS65RB 9 bidders, $13,000
    Lot 430 PCGS66RB 8 bidders, $18,000

    Lloyd,
Best of luck on getting it. It is a beautiful example. In future updates, I need to add the "juice" to the numbers.

Here's the latest update as of Monday evening with 10 days to go to the auction. All bids are INCLUDING the 15% juice.

I was outbid AGAIN!!! That 66RB is one of the best I've ever seen, even though only through pictures and not seeing it "live". Yes, DMWJR, I said I was Done in my message to you, but I couldn't help myself!! Looks like $30000 or more, which to me is...

    ...Amazing for a RB.

    Lloyd,
I'm rooting for you to get that coin. I can't see how you won't make money whenever you might sell it in the future. It will only go up in value over time IMHO.

I'm also expecting to improve my #293 position in the WS of coin trading after this auction. I "own" all 23 65RB's and 4 of the 6 66 RB's. I gotta believe the 1909VDB Matte Proof in the PCGS price guide will reflect what these coins go for in Long Beach next week.

History is full of top auction coins selling for much less a couple of years later, after auction fever was over. At these bids, I would have to have looked at this one (and any other superb gems) and decided this one stands up and dances when I hold it!image

Three and one half days since the last update and the ONLY change to any of the lots we are tracking (see prior message) is lot 463, the damaged 1990 no S proof set. One new bid brings that lot to 5 bidders and a current price with the juice of $2,070. Two and one half days left for internet bidding. Good luck everyone.

    Steve,
Aren't you upgrading your 09VDB matte so you can pass me your old one?
I'll be watching the auctions from the sidelines, as most will.

FYI: I spotted another 09VDB matte NGC 66RB in Coin World in a dealer ad.

    Mike,
Glad to see you participating here. Unfortunately, I'm not anticipating to compete for another PR1909VDB. Eight years to get the one I have and find out you were the underbidder is enough for me. I doubt we will ever see another LEGITIMATE one ever go for under $2k.
    Steveimage

P.S. My recallection is that CW dealer ad was for around $30k. Do you remember the exact offering price?

It was in Coin World May 29th edition on page 75 with a buying price of $27.5K...I won't mention the dealer since I really don't know the rules of posting here and I don't want to step on anyones toes.

I have no selling interest in above mentioned matte, just the interesting info that 4 of 420 up for sale at one time.

Auction is over at 6PM eastern for Lincoln cents.
    All prices WITH 15% juice.

    The 1909VDB Matte Proof coins:

    Lot 428 NGC 64BN, 8 bids, $8,050
    Lot 429 PCGS 65RB, 10 bids, $17,250
    Lot 430 PCGS 66RB, 12 bids, $29,900

    The 1990 No S coins:

Lot 462 PCGS 67DCAM, 4 bids Reserve of $7,475 NOT SOLD
Lot 463 damaged set, 6 bids, $3,220 no reserve
Lot 464 damaged set, 4 bids, $3,220 no reserve

The 3 Matte Proofs went to internet bidders. Interesting results on the two damaged proof sets with the 1990 No S Lincoln. Floor action boosted the final price of both sets by an additional $400. The winner must believe he can conserve them.
