Home World & Ancient Coins Forum

I went to the bank yesterday......

and bought home some goodies:

My slabbed Zar coins ( not including the 7 getting slabbed at the moment ) & 4 odd coins ( USA, Dutch & German ):

image

My Eliasberg collection ( I have 4 more on the way ):

image

My 1980 Proof Sovereign set:

image

And part of my Rijksdaalder set ( this folder also houses my ZAR silver collection ):

image

As you can see I am still having trouble with that 50K limit.

Anyhow just thought that I'd photograph these and post them as they are heading back to safety this afternoon so it'll be a while before I see them again.

Nice hoard, ZAR!! But I have a question on the coins in 2x2s in the album: are they PVC or PVC-free?

"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." -Luke 11:9

"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." -Deut. 6:4-5

"For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; He will save us." -Isaiah 33:22
  • I would hope in this day & age that they are PVC free.

The holders etc were bought in a specialist coin shop so I would assume that they sell PVC free holders.

How can I make 100% sure ? There is nothing mentioned on the boxes that the holders came in.

Please don't assume. There are a ton of unscrupulous dealers/suppliers out there only to make a buck/pound/euro, and they couldn't give a flying rat's a$$ if your precious coins are destroyed or not. Please only buy products that are advertised and described as 100% PVC free, such as E&T Cointainer's Saflips, which are made of Mylar, which is safe. Airtite capsules are another safe way to go. By the way, now you'll need to do a full acetone rinse on all those coins before replacing them in safe holders.

    Here is a Hartberger coin-killer:

  • Hmmmm - Hartberger 2X2's are what my coins are in.

What's an Acetone rinse - where can I buy it & how do I do it ?

Is there a decent web based supplier for Mylar flips in Europe ?
  • Very nice 1980 proof set. I was offered one of those a few years back at a local coin show and I didn't have the funds at the time, big regrets

    Dr J
  • Only 10K minted - I'd bet that some of those are damaged or broken up as well.

I had an eye on them for a while and eventually saw one locally but the guy was charging an arm & a leg for it. I ended up getting it on the bay. In hindsight I should have just rang Chards but it's a set I'll have for life so it doesn't really matter anyway. image

Here are a few links relating to acetone. Read them all, and if your appetite isn't sated, then do a search for acetone and you'll find many more!

Uhmmm.... I tried your link to acetone baths and got this message:

The page you were accessing requires variables to be passed to it.
    Error Code: 100

Any ideas? I have bathed a few coins in the past with acetone to remove a sticky greenish film and would like to know more on the subject.

    Thanks!

Hartberger is self adhesive 2X2s are convenient to use but the glue compound are bad for coins in the long run. Therefore, I declare this product junk.

I am into baseball card collecting and more of an expert in that arena compared to this and I can say with confidence that there are "preservation" products out there that have no business in the hobby.

If they do not serve the collector's interest, they have no business being in business ripping off unsuspecting newbies who try and do what's best for their collection.

I am a bit surprised that this Dutch company is the way it is. Usually, Germany and the Netherlands don't make junk like this. If they do, the well educated public can quickly clamp down on this sort of company and drive it to its demise.

The Dutch and the Germans are well educated and informed collectors often criticizing the preservation junk that gets through to American collectors. I buy my capsules from Germany even though I live in Southern California. Actually, I have been under the tutelage of an expert German collector who got me started in this hobby in the first place.

The glue used in Hartberger's 2x2s is bad enough, but the real killer is the PVC plastic windows which tend to eat into the coin within weeks.

I agree with you, Geist, that such products have absolutely no place in numismatics, and the producers and spreaders of the disease should be drawn and quartered.
