Should I end my eBay auction early?

I just listed my PSA 8 Walter Payton rc that is dead centered. Some guy asked me to end it for $200. Do you think I should do it?

If not, what should I tell this guy?

Whatever you do ethics should not play a role in your decision. It's YOUR CARD until someone actually hands you over money for it; until then you can do whatever the hell you want with it, and you have a right to feel good about whatever that 'it' may be.

I say no way...let it play out.
  • Keep it going, only thing'll happen is you get more money, right?

That seems to be the magic number for Payton in an 8.

It was just a few months ago, you could buy one at $150. Lately I've seen them go as high as $250. The one you had on here was pretty sharp looking, I think I'd let it ride. Perhaps someone steals this one for $180-$190, but that's probably the low side. Perhaps it goes $250.

I've never been a fan of ending an auction early, but like Boopotts said, it's your card. I'm certainly not against it morally.

    good luck either way,

p.s. I'll give you $150 for it if you just want to give it to a fellow board member.image
  • I'd say keep it going. You don't know who is watching it, who is bidding on it now, tomorrow or with eight seconds to play. We've seen some key cards in all sports go for 2 or 3 times SMR because of their centering, and your Payton is one of the nicer 8's I've seen.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

If you think the price is pretty much where it would go if the auction ran its course, then go for it.

Any opportunity to stick it to eBay is one that should be taken, in my humble opinion. image

I couldn't agree more... my monthly eBay bill is already pretty steep for the minimal amount of business I conduct on eBay.

I love it when people make me offers for cards in my eBay store... I'd rather discount the item and give a break to a fellow collector than to eBay.

That being said, I'm a shareholder of eBay (425 shares plus positions in a couple mutual funds)... but the few people who actually beat them out of a few bucks like this are insignificant in the whole big picture, and they are still an excellent company with a strong future.

i think selling off ebay for a buy it now or store listing is different than ending a no reserve .99 cent auction early. i don't like paying my ebay bill but can't complain - where else are you going to get the traffic for about a 4% fee?

last time i was asked to end an auction early, i was offered $125.00 for a raw card i expected to sell for $1.50.. damn right i ended the auction and sold it to him..

the time before that, some guy offered me 4x SMR ($240) and i refused, the card ended up selling for $404.00, and the guy that made the original offer wasnt even one of the top bidders..

Done that twice. If this does get a 9, it won't be by me. I just hope I don't know if it ever lands in a 9.

I also was being somewhat sarcastic. With the link I gave it shows an 8 Payton going for nearly $300 and I don't think I would be much of a man if I settled at nearly 1/3 of that price and 5 bidders bid $225 or over.

  • From experience, everytime I get an offline offer for either cards, memorabilia, or whatever, the auction price will usually be at LEAST 1/3 more than the offer. If it was for items I priced high sitting around in my store, it would be a different situation. Like pandrews said, when you check out the final bids, the guy that gave you the offer wont even be one of the bidders.....
