The first plate in the book is a brutal copy of an indian. The book examines the following:
1. Weak/fatty, mushy letters, devices
2. Repeating depressions (in the fields)
3. Tool Marks
4. Spikes (Near dentils)
5. Sunken letters or numbers
6. Color
7. Variation of counterfeit characteristics
8. Common, shared dies
9. Edge
10. Greasy luster
11. Highpoint luster and harsh cleaning
12. Bubbles
There are other topics but these are the high points. The book goes through each series with tons of photos of every example (200 photos) of the above incidences on coins. Each series and each date of known counterfeits of pre '33 US gold.
Summary...if you are collecting pre '33 gold, I would confidently recommend this book to you. For my indians, it talks about so much more than the tool mark on the neck and the misaligned dots in the necklace...there are easily a dozen diagnostics for the $5's alone. I had no idea the $10's were counterfeited too. I am about to buy one that is fully described in this book...cool.
