1992 Bowman Carlos Delgado - Underpriced?

I know there is a lot of 1992 Bowman out there, but the going eBay rate of $10 for a 1992 Bowman PSA 9 Carlos Delgado seems like a great deal to me .... anyone else agree?

I could be wrong but Delgado has always been under the radar. On the other hand he spent most of his years with the post-W.S. champion Jays and many of those teams underperformed. (In some ways he's just like Fred McGriff was with the post-1985 Jays.) And I'm not sure a rebuilding Marlins team is going to do much for his publicity.

I didn't know until I looked it up but Delgado's only 31 HRs away from 400. He's only going to be 34 this June so he's probably an easy candidate for 500.

  • Well, you can find a lot of deals if you just catch them at the right time. I'm the type of guy if I see something way cheaper than I think it's worth I'll scoop it up even if I'm not really interested in that player, just to get it. Here's a couple of deals I've gotten this month....
1999 Topps Traded Mark Mulder RC BGS 9.5 Price-8.56 delivered
1992 Donruss Rookies Manny Ramirez rc PSA 9 and 2 Pedro Martinez Donruss Rookies PSA 9 Price-7.50 delivered
2003 Finest Aquan Boldin BGS 9 Price-3.24 delivered
1986 Sportflics Rookies Jose Canseco BGS 9.5 Price-8.50 delivered

I also got some others, my limit is 12-13 per card so even if something I want goes over that I'll hold off and pick up something else instead. I've been finding some pretty nice deals, really liked that I got the Mulder and Canseco for under 10.
    Collecting;
    Mark Mulder rookies
    Chipper Jones rookies
    Orlando Cabrera rookies
    Lawrence Taylor
    Sam Huff
    Lavar Arrington
    NY Giants
    NY Yankees
    NJ Nets
    NJ Devils
1950s-1960s Topps NY Giants Team cards

Looking for Topps rookies as well.

When Delgado was first called up in 94 I believe he went on a huge hitting tear in April. The price of his Bowman rookie soared - if I remember correctly it approached $100. Then he struggled got sent to the minors and the strike hit. His card prices dropped quickly and they have never approached that level again, despite 9 straight seasons of 30 homers and 7 100 rbi seasons. The reality that there are a lot more 92 Bowmans available than originally thought also hurts his value. Delgado appeals to those who like HR's and RBI's and those that love his OPS numbers. A PSA 9 for $10 sounds like a great price, especially since Delgado is still only 33 years old.

His career has been good so far.I think we need to see what he does in the New York market. Many players that did very well in other markets could not adapt to the NY market and tumbled in NY.$10 is cheap and a good cheap gamble potentially its growth could be questionalbe.

First and foremost, collect what you enjoy. If you happen to make a little money, all the power to you.

From an investment point of view, I would say no. He's got good numbers, but no fan appeal.

I agree. Buy just one or two but I wouldn't buy 100 as an "investment."
  • the modern card market is primarily based on hype and media attention...not really numbers. this is true for the entire hobby (see munson, black sox, other non HOF yankees), but more so for modern than in post or pre war. gary sheffield is likely going to get into the HOF (assuming he doesnt get busted for steroid use or he gets hurt this or next year, thus ending his career short of, say, 500 home runs). but his rookie cards can be bought with pocket change. palmeiro pre steroid talk was the same. bagwell, roberto alomar....i can go on and on and list players who have put up some pretty good numbers, yet their rookie cards can be had for mere pennies. a lot of this is due to over production, but that's not the only reason (on a relative scale, compare a roger maris rookie to an orlando cepeda rookie...maris is not a HOF, but cepeda is). like a poster stated above, some of these rookie cards went crazy when these players first burst into the major league scene. delgado's rookies went upwards of 100 dollars...bagwell's rookies, chipper jones rookies, sheffield's rookies....all of them went for 10 to 20 times their worth today. why? because of hype. collectors who are in reality investors go after these rookie cards in hopes of finding a player that will provide huge returns. the next pujols...the next arod...the next jeter. that's what they are looking for. now, it may end up that these players actually turn out to be pretty good numbers wise...but, unlike arod, pujols and jeter....they dont play in a big market or dont have that special something that sparks collectors to buy their cards.

in sum, collect delgado if you are a fan of his...collect delgado if you like collecting players who put up great power numbers....collect delgado if you are a blue jays or mets fan....but dont collect delgado if you want a large return on investment.
