The following coin is the strangest South African Commemorative Coin that I have seen - it has a rimmed Kaalpond on one side and a Rimless Kaalpond on the otherside. Dated 1900 - 2001 I didn't even know that they existed. It is not made of gold and so the Kaalponds are only copies. Sorry for the bad photos but if anyone can dig up axtra info on this coin it would be greatly appreciated.

I really like that PR63 Shilling - nice Color...
  • The toning on it is something else - beautiful blue/purples when you tilt it in the light.

Due to my great photography skills it's easy to make out on the photos. image

Errr.....that's being sarcastic of course. image

So excited you couldn't wait, eh?image

When I used to post a lot of images, I would hurry sometimes with similar results to yours. Now you're going to want to re-image everything and what have you accomplished? Your other images (in the past) were pretty good...

Stupid question 1: what is a Kaalpenny and a Kaalpond? image

Stupid question 2: I think I've seen SA blanks bought by you before, what's so special about them (I'm sure they're ultra rare) and why doesn't NGC grade them numerically?

  • I had some OK shots in the past but I just can't recreate them.

At some stage I will have to take a day and take shots of coins and monitor exactly what I do.

In order for that to happen though I need two things:

    1) My exams to be over

    2) The Mrs to be out of the house image
  • Hi Dimitri,

The Kaalpenny & Kaalponds are blanks that were meant to be used for striking ZAR coinage ( ie the Pennies & the Ponds ).

However during 1900 the ZAR region was under seige by the British so Paul Kruger ordered all the coins to be removed from the mint so that the British wouldn't get their hands on them. The removed coins included both finished coins and the blank planchets which were being prepared to be minted.

Often on the Kaalponds you will see circular marks. This is due to the scraping machine getting the blanks down to the correct weight before being struck.

Both types of 'Kaal' ( meaning bald in African ) coins are rare with the Penny being much rarer then the Pond. I own two Kaalpennies and I know someone in South Africa that owns 3. I am not sure how many have been graded but I'm pretty sure that there aren't many more graded Kaalpennies out there.

Perhaps someone could check the info at NGC and PM me ( I'd REALLY appreciate it ).

NGC doesn't grade these numerically because to grade a coin you need to check for wear on the high parts. Because these coins are smooth there are no high parts and so NGC doesn't grade them numerically.

    Hope that helps. image

It sure does. There's a nice thread somewhere, titled, the forgotten South African currency, I forget the author's handle, tokencoin I think, he just made a couple of posts, both very interesting. If you haven't read it yet that is, a little search would help you find it. image

  • Yeah - those posts are written by Scott Balson.

Man, he's got some ZAR coin collection.

    Mine doesn't even compare. image
  • Could someone please look up the Kaalpenny population @ NGC and let me know the amount of Kaalpennies that have been graded.

    TIA ( REALLY appreciated ).
